The experience of doing a task that you think someone else must have done it before. E.g. Createing a project plan, creating a test doc, writing a particular software component. There is a good chance they are done before within the organisation – don’t you wish you know who has done it before so that you can ask them or get a copy of their work as a starting point for yours? In essense, you want to get more value out of your organisation’s assets!
What’s an asset? When zero, one or more set of work products are shared or referenced to meet a recurring need from one or more stake holders In an organisation, organizational assets needs more than that. Organizational asset collaboration and understanding Which types of assets and how are they related? What set and version of work products? What meta data is required and from which repository? What is asset version? Organizational asset governance Asset visibility and permissions? Who needs to review this asset? What set of policies must be met are have been met? Organizational asset discovery and maintenance How to harvest assets? How to find assets? Which assets do I maintain and how?
Update and manage cost Business Challenge Rational Solution (Product/Feature) Business benefits Reduce IT maintenance costs caused by IT not being able to find assets Automate cataloging assets with RAM RAM powerful search Notification of new assets Reduce time to create, maintain and find assets Reduce cost implications of not finding the asset Savings from reduced duplicate assets Duplication of assets results in higher development and operations training costs to maintain complex systems RAM search, reviews and policies RAM categorizations and states to communicate sunset or non-strategic assets Audit reporting to understand asset usage Reduce development, maintenance and operations costs by project and across lines business Reduced operations and maintenance costs by reducing solution complexity Business is overwhelmed with compliance mandates and lack policy enforcement resulting in unmanaged risks. Manual reviews are costly Source of costs: Unapproved open source or GPL Manual or ad hoc reviews Automated RAM review boards & policy enforcement Out of the box policies Remove non-reviewed & non-compliant assets Number review process automated with policies (Number of reviews, people and time) Eliminate costs from past risk and policy failure occurrences to estimate cost avoidance Not getting promised value from our globally distributed development Are they delivering: Quality designs & implementations On-time RAM asset collaboration and governance, reporting, notification enables intelligent globally distributed development Improved development productivity and visibility Difficult to identify assets and resources that are driving business value resulting in improper resource allocation Business intelligence reports Allocated resources appropriately to drive business value AKA PPM for fine grain components Uncontrolled changes without buy-in from business and technical stake-holders Business intelligence reports Impact analysis Notification of asset changes Reduced development and maintenance costs reducing the number of changes that must be reversed of fixed
For clients who want to: Understand what assets they have, how they are related and are driving business value Reduce the overall cost of governing, planning, implementing and maintaining solutions Deliver solutions faster and decrease time to market Reduce delivery risk by being more consistent and using proven assets, resulting in increased quality and reliability of solutions
Avoid duplicate assets and Asset Reviews in Web Client - Carlos Asset reviews ( email notification that you have to review asset, go to my dashboard, start review process.) Show Similar named asset policy and naming convention policy and scan for GPL in asset artifacts on the asset submission in rich client from phase 1. Prevent unapproved asset use, changes or deployment Gili - At same time release engineer tries to deploy the asset but it hasn’t yet been approved and deployment fails ensuring only approved assets are being deployed. Including validation of open source component use. Gili -Asset is then approved and then deployed. Gili- Asset access permission are read only first and then you request permission from Connie to use “Log4J.Jar” Gili - Connie gets “request permission” from Bob for Open Source component Jar. Show both Individual asset permission or Role based access to the community Gili - Show links to deployed service in asset details. In the past customers would have to procure hardware, infrastructure services like application servers, database servers, web server and other security services. After that, they would have to procure, install and configure the software needed to to be able to begin development and testing. All of these steps could take months to do. With the IBM Cloud this is now done in minutes. What is really compelling for me is that the IBM Cloud is being powered by IBM Rational Asset Manager. You must have a way to catalog these cloud services and virtual images so that people can reuse existing instances rather than instantiate or duplicate more instances of similar services that already exist. This duplication incurs costs from wasted time to create these duplicate assets, increased network bandwith costs and increased server processing utilization costs. The IBM Cloud shows how IBM is using Rational Asset Manager to manage these virtual images as assets.
