“… so early in this year I told myself, I have got to do something that is purely my own and is up to my standards. I chose the song "Two Weeks" by my favorite band Grizzly Bear because it inspired me. ” – Gabe Askew

Creating Your Brand

Editor's Notes

  1. The BLS estimates that 50% of the jobs we have in 10 years do not even exist yet. Therefore we can not focus on the position and hope to continue doing that for the rest of our lives. We must instead focus on ourselves and what makes us a unique contributor.
  2. What is this company? What is the brand? What does this company represent? Why do you choose it over similar products? How do these companies convey they brand?
  3. Your brand begins with taking a good look at yourself. Some things to consider. D.A.T.A. Desire : “Our visions begin with our desires.” Describe the difference between desires and wishes. They are both wants, but desires are something you would be willing to put forth the effort to do. Wishes you will not. Ex: You want to climb Mt. Everest. Are you willing to do all the training and the physical effort to make the climb? If so it is a desire, if not it is a wish. Why are desires important? They are active motivators. Encourage students to think back to when they were young. What did they want to be then? What did they do when they had no homework or chores. These are good signs of your desires. Ability : Transferable skills. Can be natural (like Strengths) or learned. Temperament : MBTI Assets : Other things that make you unique. Such as study abroad. Desires and Temperament and Assets are personal and what make you unique and different.
  4. When it comes to abilities you will want to consider building those that employers are looking for. According to the 2009 NACE survey Mention that communication has been number 1 for 10 years.

  6. Once you decide what your brand will consist of, you will need to build your skills and interests. Classes will be your foundation while you are in college. Be sure to expand your interests by taking classes that are new to you. You will then want to continue building your brand in a variety of ways.
  7. Beyond speaking about your brand, you will also have to present it. There are a variety of ways you can do this. resume, portfolio for students in visual fields, online – blogs, linkedin, online portfolios (visualcv.com) , presentations on campus (All U, club leadership) professional organizations, publications again on campus (New U) or professional publications.
  8. As you build your brand, you will also have to get the word out. This requires being able to talk about it. Mention that you will have to talk about your brand in networking situations. Have the group name some situations where you will have to showcase your brand. Mention that the more often you manage to flow it into conversations the better.
