MBA 423 Human Resources Management (Elective Course) The effective management of people has an important bearing on organisational success. The importance of personnel policies and procedures has created opportunity for managers and administrators with expertise in this field. The course provides conceptual and practical skills in areas such as the strategic aspects of human resource management, manpower planning, recruitment and selection, performance appraisal, training and development, salary administration and employee benefits. Industrial relations in the context of the South Pacific region is an important theme. http://www.usp.ac.fj/index.php?id=mba423 Major Research Project (MRP) - 15% Students will work in their allocated groups for the major research project (MRP) – which are indicated in the Course Outline. Each group will be required to base their project on arelevant and interesting HRM topic or current issue or company in which the group members have an interest. A 30 minute group presentation (inclusive of answer and question session) will be made during weeks 10 and 11 of the trimester, as per the brief class timetable on page 7. The group’s power-point presentations, both soft and hard copies, must be submitted to the course facilitator on or before the presentation. A written report (around 20 pages) is required for the MRP - the due date for the report will be agreed to later in class. The class and the facilitator will evaluate each group’s presentation. The class and the facilitator will evaluate each group’s presentation. A blank evaluation form will be made available in class and posted in Moodle. However, the facilitator has the final say in terms of the final marks to be allocated to each group. The criterias to be used as a guide for evaluating the MRP presentations is provided in the blank evaluation form. Canada’s workplace is very diverse; Internationally Educated Professionals (IEPs) contribute to Canada’s diversity and as newcomers have to learn how to manage diversity in the workplace. IEPs should have an insight on how to harness the performance potential of an increasingly diverse workforce to improve business performance. Facts indicative of the magnitude of Canadian workforce diversity: 1.Canada brings in 250,000 immigrants every year. Skilled immigrants constitute the largest group of immigrants to Canada. 2.Two thirds of Canada’s population growth from 31.2 million in 2006 to 33.5 million in 2011 came from immigration. By 2030, immigration is expected to contribute to 80% of Canada’s population growth. 3.The imminent retirement of baby boomers, currently representing 43% of the workforce will create a shortage in the workforce, which has to be bridged by immigration. The Conference Board of Canada estimates that Canada needs 375,000 immigrants a year to stabilize the workforce and ensure economic growth. Thus, it is important for IEPs to learn how to successfully manage diversity in the Canadian workplace and be able to contribute to improve business performance. What our presentation will involve The group’s presentation will discuss diversity management in the workplace, by defining it and providing examples and personal experiences on how diversity enables innovation and turns it to competitive advantage for the organization. The presentation will also cover benefits of diversity in the workplace, the requirements to instill diversity in the work culture, and the challenges associated with the process. Overview of the federal laws is included as well. Our report will also talk about government organizations that oversee the implementation of federal legislative tools. The presentation will endeavor to highlight the inclusion and diversity practices adopted by Canadian corporations and the problems faced by newcomers in gaining acceptance of their education and credentials besides the challenges faced in communicating with a diverse workforce and harnessing its potential to increase business performance. Actions The recommendations are aimed at increasing the awareness of IEPs to face challenges and better manage diversity in the Canadian workplace, by •Providing better information about important aspects of diversity •making them aware of their rights and privileges •Instilling pride and confidence, that despite the challenges the IEPs will face, they represent a talent pool that has made significant contribution to Canadian economy and society •Help identify companies and inclusion practices that encourage and embrace diversity •Provide them with suggestions given by industry experts on how they can integrate faster into the workplace and start managing themselves and others better to increase business performance

Organizations that are committed to equality and inclusion must take steps to combat the examples of discrimination and harassment that have been covered in this chapter. And they must take steps to make diversity a goal in the pre-employment stages as well as in the post-employment stages. Anyone with managerial or supervisory responsibilities should pay careful attention to hiring and performance-rewarding practices, and make sure to rely on relevant information for making decisions and ignore race-based stereotypes. The following are examples of what leaders and organizations can do make sure employees feel valued. Interview Selection Process To ensure fairness for all applicants, organizations should use highly structured interviews during the selection process to avoid bias based on race or gender Highly structured interviews consists of the following 15 characteristics: “(1) job analysis, (2) same questions, (3) limited prompting, (4) better questions, (5) longer interviews, (6) control of ancillary information, (7) limited questions from candidates, (8) multiple rating scales, (9) anchored rating scales, (10) detailed notes, (11) multiple interviewers, (12) consistent interviewers, (13) no discussion between interviews, (14) training, and (15) statistical prediction.” Similarity bias can occur when interviewers prefer interviewees with whom they share similar traits. Organizations can mitigate this challenge if all 15 characteristics of a structured interview are used consistently with each job applicant. Diversified Mentoring Relationships Thanks to the rapid growth of international travel and globalization, managers are often called upon to manage a workforce that is increasingly diverse. Research has shown that racially and ethnically diverse firms have better financial performance than more homogeneous firms, because, as mentioned, employees from different backgrounds and with different experiences can give the firm a competitive advantage in various ways. It is necessary, however, that managers and those in positions of power are adequately equipped to manage diverse workforces in ways that are beneficial to all. Diversified mentoring relationships are relationships in which the mentor and the mentee differ in terms of their status within the company and within larger society. The differences could be in terms of race, gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, or other status. Research has found that these types of relationships are mutually beneficial and that the mentor and the mentee both have positive outcomes in terms of knowledge, empathy, and skills related to interactions with people from different power groups. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
