We explore some aspects encompassed by the notion of ‘interactivity’, in relation to whiteboards, presentations, online materials and classroom practice. We explore techniques for creating simple online games and quizzes within a virtual learning environment. You learn how to create dynamic games using a simple toolkit commonly found in primary schools, and consider how this might also be used by pupils.

This presentation describes the research journey using as a stepping stone the historical/contextual teaching and learning practices in Art and Design – an inescapable reality. This provides for some of the reasons that sustain the resistance against implementing elearning in the sector. The presentation argues for the recognition of disciplinary differences. Subsequently, phenomenography, action research and grounded theory as suitable research methods are elaborated upon through the description of research tasks that cover social media, informal learning, the use of mobile devices (iPads) for teaching and learning, and the clash between traditional versus digital media in the context of studio-based learning. The presentation concludes with two epiphanies that help the presenter conceptualise the nature of the challenge vis-à-vis elearning in Art and Design.

This workshop asks how we can use methods drawn from design, art, and craft, informed by interdisciplinary and systems thinking, to materialize not just envisioned ‘things’, but abstract or invisible ideas and relationships. There is an emerging set of research practices using tangible or material models, or constructive making and embodying to visualize how people think about concepts ranging from invisible systems and infrastructures to mental models, personal data which would otherwise be invisible, or even the phenomenological dimensions of experiences themselves. Examples include explorations of the design of public services, healthcare processes, mental health experiences, career paths, crafters’ movements, and experiences of social networks (Aguirre Ulloa and Paulsen, 2017; Rygh and Clatworthy, 2019; Luria et al, 2019; Ricketts and Lockton, 2019; Nissen and Bowers, 2015; Fass, 2016).

Adoption of MDE technologies (and techniques) could be dis- cussed within the context of existing technology acceptance models (TAMs). For instance, Davis’ basic TAM model [4] emphasizes (perceived) usefulness and ease of use. While these factors are clearly relevant, we aim at a more refined view by paying special attention to how MDE, at this stage, is driven by research and university teaching. That is, we describe the challenge of improving chances of MDE adoption (i.e., improved ‘adoptability’) in terms of maturing three legs of an ‘adoption chair’: i) reproducibility of research re- sults; ii) reusability of essential technologies; iii) teachability of the underlying techniques.
