What is UDL? Set of principles for designing curriculum Provides all individuals equal opportunities to learn Calls for varied and flexible ways
Why is UDL the best approach for Carlos Goes to School? UDL understands learners with disabilities are vulnerable to learning barriers Our learner has a language barrier and a developmental delay UDL meets the challenges of diversity by:	 using flexible instructional materials using varied instructional strategies providing educators with tools to meet learners’ needs
The 3 Primary Principles of UDL
Providing Multiple Means of Representation The “what” of learning Students perceive and comprehend information differently Gives all learners the opportunity to understand new information
How will Carlos Goes to School providemultiple means of representation? We will provide an audio option for the book. We will provide graphics that children can relate to. We will provide text and audio in both English and Spanish.
Providing Multiple Means of Action and Expression The “how” of learning Students navigate their learning environment and express what they know differently Gives learners the opportunity to express their knowledge in a way that is comfortable to them
How will Carlos Goes to School provide multiple means of action and expression? Students will be told where objects are then     asked to point/show/tell where the objects           are in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to set personal       goals to learn the new information. We will provide options for students to express    their knowledge.
Providing Multiple Means of Engagement The “why” of learning Students are different in how they are motivated to learn and can be engaged Gives learners the opportunity to become interested in what they are learning
How will Carlos Goes to Schoolprovide multiple means of engagement? We will use appealing and relatable graphics. The audio voice will be exciting and encouraging. We will provide language options (English and Spanish) for students to listen to the book.
