40. “ Have you ever been in a fight? If you have you should know what this is. If you don’t, this is a puddle of blood from a very bad fight.” Boy, 12 years old
What brought you to this presentation given the dryness of the title? What is your interest in this topic? Visual culture, cultural studies, violence, adolescence, curriculum? Background-work in progress-raises questions rather than draws any conclusions. It’s a bit like having a deadline for a show-huge extrinsic motivation, so for me having a presentation forced me to form ideas a little, make it a little more cohesive How about 20 mins. at the end for questions? But really if your question will make you burst-please don’t wait –just ask it. Why this interest- Various interests converged- adolescence, war photography-Don MacCullin, Susan Meisalis, ‘the carnivalesque’ popular culture-”Cultural History of Violent Entertainment,” and a certain kind of art from Goya, Breughal, Hogarth, much of the work in Inside of Me/Outside of Me at PS 1 recently. Did anyone see it? This exhibition was described as Focusing “on the primordial relationship between the internal and the external in three main chapters: metabolism, sexuality, reproduction, and violence. Into Me / Out of Me brings together explorations and visualizations of these three processes, which deal with the inner and outer surfaces, and the objects and subjects of the physical exchange between the human body and the material world. Anyway, this is a sprawling presentation but I had an interest in the violent imagery emerging in middle school art work and my own interests that I described-thus a convergence of interests.
