They were inaugurated in the spring
of 1896

• The first games were held in
April 1896. They attracted
Athletes from the United
States, Great Britian and 11
other nations.
• Only 42 events in 9 sports
were scheduled for these
games
3. When are the Games Held?
• The Olympic Games in Berlin
in 1916 were cancelled
because of World War I;
those scheduled for 1940
and 1944 were cancelled
because of World War II
• The winter Olympic Games
were added in 1924
• The games resumed in 1948
and are held every 4 years
