Your understanding of Project and Project Management

    What is Operations Management, Program
    Management, Account Management, Delivery Management

Is that a different management trade? Does MBA cover
    Project Management?

    Project Management Umbrella

PM Framework as defined by PMI

Do all Project Managers practice according to PMI principles?

                                   © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 7
Your Understanding

• What do think of a Project?
• What does a PM do?
• Do every organization adhere to some standards?
• What happens in your company when a project kicks off?
• Who brings in the project?
• Who manages the project?
• Who delivers the project?
• Who is fired if project fails?
• Who is rewarded if project is delivered successfully?
• What are parameters defining success of project?
• How do these parameters get impacted? By Sales Team? By CEO? By Bribes? What
    all you can think of?
• Most of us are from IT companies. Lets discuss at least one project we are involved
into and try to dig out commonalities and difference.

                                   © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 8
Similarities and Differences

• Note Down

    Similarities Differences

• Brain storming
     – Why differences? Can a practice have many opinions? Won’t customer get confused if
he deals with multiple project managers/service providers?
     – Even internal HR assessment for promotions will go for a toss!
     – Good project managers may get neglected?

                                    © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 9
Boundaries of Project Management

• Balloon Effect?
• Where does it begin and where does it end?
• Why so may designations in companies –
     – Account Managers
     – Operations Managers
     – General Managers
     – Delivery Managers
     – Add few prefixes like Associate, Senior, Global,
     – Add few suffixes
• Do these people (not having designation as project manager) do something
    different?
• Only criteria that differentiates one project manager from another is his
practice/ability to deliver the project in time, with agreed scope and in agreed
    cost.
• Think of balloon blowing.

                                        © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 10
Is PM a different trade?

• Why so much of fuss about Project Management?
• Are these not important?
     – Technology Management
     – Financial Management
     – Asset Management
     – Healthcare Management
     – Hospitality Management
     – Event Management
• What does an MBA learn in B-Schools?
• Why can’t an MBA be obvious choice as Project Management?
• If MBAs are not required for Project Management, why are we spending so much
    time understanding project management?

                                  © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 11
Project Management Umbrella

• What all you can think of in a project?
     – Type
     – Eco System
     – Resources
     – Time
     – Cost
     – Scope
     – Communication
     – Quality
     – Risk
     – Profit?
     – Research?
     – IP?
     – Events?
     – CRM
     – Pre-Sales, Sales and Marketing?

                                      © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 12
How does PMI define Project Management?

• PMI’s role in the practice
• Why PMP?
• Why not MBA?
• MBA needs 2 years full time study whereas PMP needs only 35 hours of contact
sessions . Both need to pass exam(s).
• Think over it!!

                                 © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 13
Do you want to
   be a PMP?

© e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 14
If No

• No issues, you will still be a Project Manager 

                                   © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 15
If Yes

• Register yourself as member of PMI.
• It costs you few $$.
• Get access to literature provided by PMI.
• Download PMBoK.
• Read it 3-4 times (I mean understand it )
• Try to unlearn the practices you have been following.
• Attend 35 hours contact session from an REP.
• Get PDUs
• Practice for exam. Lot of free sites/groups to help you.
• Apply for the exam. (It costs you few $$ again)
• Get PMP

                                    © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 16
What all PMBoK covers?

• Little bit of everything which is required in General Management
• Its like a highly compressed MBA
• You will have to understand 5 process groups and 9 knowledge areas to know
completely project management as defined and expected by PMI.
• Lots of jargons!
• Pre-defined process flows…no alterations are expected even if you are a Ph.D. in
    management.
• Based on IPO model
• You will have to be very specific in terms of inputs and outputs to and from a
process. May require mug up or remembering/recalling techniques 

Areas for practice

• Cost Management
• Time Management

• There are several formulas in these areas. Once understood, can help you score
    full marks.

      Progression

How far you can go?

• Areas not taught in PMP course
     – Marketing Management
     – Managerial Statistics
     – Leadership and Organization Theories
     – Entrepreneurship Skills
     – Tools and software to support management
     – Customer Relationship Management
     – Financial and Managerial Accounting (Balance Sheets, P&L and other Financial
       Statements etc.)
     – Mergers and Acquisition, Organic and Inorganic Growth, Business Plans
     – Pre-sales, Sales and Post Sales (Product Management, Service Management)
     – Estimations

• In short… a lot
     – MBA from a good B-School covers most of these areas which most of the CEOs are
       aware of!

                                     © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 23
Continued….

• Start with Account Management
• Gradually learn to know financial statements, cost management from a
    professional perspective
• Ultimately you would want to earn more profits, lower cost of operations.
• Move towards CRM – understand your customers, retaining a customer is more
important and better than hunting for a new customer.
• Acquire new customers through pre-sales and better responses to RFPs. Write
better estimates, have better market intelligence.
• Delivery Management is nothing but glorified name of project management.
     – Tell me any project manager who is not required to deliver 
• You can grow to manage your own business unit
     – That needs much more than just a PMP
     – Most of the BU heads are not PMPs
• Bottom Line is More Revenue, Less Expenses, More Profits
• If you can learn this art, sky is the limit

                                     © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 24
Next Steps

© e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 25
What will you want to do from here

• Going for PMP is not a bad idea.
• Going for a part time MBA is even a better idea if you are already working as a
    project manager.
• Interact with CxO level people. It will change your perspective. You don’t have to
wait for Ratan Tata or Mukesh Ambani’s appointment for that 
• Interact with end users, it will make you better product manager.
• Knowing Market intelligence is must to move ahead. Most of the CEOs are
marketing managers. They bring most of the business for their companies.
    Networking is must to grow.
• Use Blogs to express yourself. Be a thought leader!
• Participate in events and network with good and influential people.
• Learn basics of your line of business. You can’t discuss movies/gossips with people
who want to do business with you . Rather serious business class people don’t
    have time for that!
• Domain knowledge is must to bring more business and grow.

  • 4. About Me • Currently doing lot of work in Cloud Computing. • Extending few AWS core CEO services • Enriching Infrastructure and Application Virtualization Competencies within e-Zest. • Building ROI and TCO calculation engine for cloud migration initiatives using mathematical modeling and heuristic algorithms. • Like to spend time with family. • Enjoy reading, socializing, playing chess, community services. • Want to see India free from Poverty, Corruption and Crime. © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 4
  • 5. Little Bit About Yourself Something about Something about Yourself Your Company Something about Your Specialty Something about Something about Your Hobbies Your Career Goal © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 5
  • 6. Project Management Overview © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 6
  • 7. Coverage Your understanding of Project and Project Management What is Operations Management, Program Management, Account Management, Delivery Management Is that a different management trade? Does MBA cover Project Management? Project Management Umbrella PM Framework as defined by PMI Do all Project Managers practice according to PMI principles? © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 7
  • 8. Your Understanding • What do think of a Project? • What does a PM do? • Do every organization adhere to some standards? • What happens in your company when a project kicks off? • Who brings in the project? • Who manages the project? • Who delivers the project? • Who is fired if project fails? • Who is rewarded if project is delivered successfully? • What are parameters defining success of project? • How do these parameters get impacted? By Sales Team? By CEO? By Bribes? What all you can think of? • Most of us are from IT companies. Lets discuss at least one project we are involved into and try to dig out commonalities and difference. © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 8
  • 9. Similarities and Differences • Note Down Similarities Differences • Brain storming – Why differences? Can a practice have many opinions? Won’t customer get confused if he deals with multiple project managers/service providers? – Even internal HR assessment for promotions will go for a toss! – Good project managers may get neglected? © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 9
  • 10. Boundaries of Project Management • Balloon Effect? • Where does it begin and where does it end? • Why so may designations in companies – – Account Managers – Operations Managers – General Managers – Delivery Managers – Add few prefixes like Associate, Senior, Global, – Add few suffixes • Do these people (not having designation as project manager) do something different? • Only criteria that differentiates one project manager from another is his practice/ability to deliver the project in time, with agreed scope and in agreed cost. • Think of balloon blowing. © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 10
  • 11. Is PM a different trade? • Why so much of fuss about Project Management? • Are these not important? – Technology Management – Financial Management – Asset Management – Healthcare Management – Hospitality Management – Event Management • What does an MBA learn in B-Schools? • Why can’t an MBA be obvious choice as Project Management? • If MBAs are not required for Project Management, why are we spending so much time understanding project management? © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 11
  • 12. Project Management Umbrella • What all you can think of in a project? – Type – Eco System – Resources – Time – Cost – Scope – Communication – Quality – Risk – Profit? – Research? – IP? – Events? – CRM – Pre-Sales, Sales and Marketing? © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 12
  • 13. How does PMI define Project Management? • PMI’s role in the practice • Why PMP? • Why not MBA? • MBA needs 2 years full time study whereas PMP needs only 35 hours of contact sessions . Both need to pass exam(s). • Think over it!! © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 13
  • 14. Do you want to be a PMP? © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 14
  • 15. If No • No issues, you will still be a Project Manager  © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 15
  • 16. If Yes • Register yourself as member of PMI. • It costs you few $$. • Get access to literature provided by PMI. • Download PMBoK. • Read it 3-4 times (I mean understand it ) • Try to unlearn the practices you have been following. • Attend 35 hours contact session from an REP. • Get PDUs • Practice for exam. Lot of free sites/groups to help you. • Apply for the exam. (It costs you few $$ again) • Get PMP © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 16
  • 17. What all PMBoK covers? • Little bit of everything which is required in General Management • Its like a highly compressed MBA • You will have to understand 5 process groups and 9 knowledge areas to know completely project management as defined and expected by PMI. • Lots of jargons! • Pre-defined process flows…no alterations are expected even if you are a Ph.D. in management. • Based on IPO model • You will have to be very specific in terms of inputs and outputs to and from a process. May require mug up or remembering/recalling techniques  © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 17
  • 18. What all needs to be managed as per PMBoK • Project Integration Management • Project Scope Management • Project Time Management • Project Cost Management • Project Quality Management • Project Human Resource Management • Project Communications Management • Project Risk Management • Project Procurement Management © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 18
  • 19. Process Groups • Initiation • Planning • Execution • Monitoring and Controlling • Closure © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 19
  • 20. Jargons • Project Charter • Activity Sequencing • Stake Holders – Finish to Start • Project Schedule – Start to Start – Start to Finish • WBS – Work Breakdown Structure – PDM or AON • Statement of Work • Estimations – Parametric • Baseline – Analogous • Critical Path – Heuristic • Quantitative and Qualitative – Bottom-up Management – Pareto Analysis • Procurement – Expert Judgement • Vendors • Crashing, Fast Tracking, Lead, Lag, • Agreements Backward Pass • Register • Few Formulas • NPV, ROI, TCO – CPI, SPI, EAC, ETC, CV, SV, PV, NPV, EV • Cost of Quality • RACI charts • Communication Channels © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 20
  • 21. Areas for practice • Cost Management • Time Management • There are several formulas in these areas. Once understood, can help you score full marks. © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 21
  • 22. Career Progression © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 22
  • 23. How far you can go? • Areas not taught in PMP course – Marketing Management – Managerial Statistics – Leadership and Organization Theories – Entrepreneurship Skills – Tools and software to support management – Customer Relationship Management – Financial and Managerial Accounting (Balance Sheets, P&L and other Financial Statements etc.) – Mergers and Acquisition, Organic and Inorganic Growth, Business Plans – Pre-sales, Sales and Post Sales (Product Management, Service Management) – Estimations • In short… a lot – MBA from a good B-School covers most of these areas which most of the CEOs are aware of! © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 23
  • 24. Continued…. • Start with Account Management • Gradually learn to know financial statements, cost management from a professional perspective • Ultimately you would want to earn more profits, lower cost of operations. • Move towards CRM – understand your customers, retaining a customer is more important and better than hunting for a new customer. • Acquire new customers through pre-sales and better responses to RFPs. Write better estimates, have better market intelligence. • Delivery Management is nothing but glorified name of project management. – Tell me any project manager who is not required to deliver  • You can grow to manage your own business unit – That needs much more than just a PMP – Most of the BU heads are not PMPs • Bottom Line is More Revenue, Less Expenses, More Profits • If you can learn this art, sky is the limit © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 24
  • 25. Next Steps © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 25
  • 26. What will you want to do from here • Going for PMP is not a bad idea. • Going for a part time MBA is even a better idea if you are already working as a project manager. • Interact with CxO level people. It will change your perspective. You don’t have to wait for Ratan Tata or Mukesh Ambani’s appointment for that  • Interact with end users, it will make you better product manager. • Knowing Market intelligence is must to move ahead. Most of the CEOs are marketing managers. They bring most of the business for their companies. Networking is must to grow. • Use Blogs to express yourself. Be a thought leader! • Participate in events and network with good and influential people. • Learn basics of your line of business. You can’t discuss movies/gossips with people who want to do business with you . Rather serious business class people don’t have time for that! • Domain knowledge is must to bring more business and grow. © e-Zest Solutions Ltd. 26
