2. Sharifa, age 22 You are taking your two small children, Fazil and Khadija to visit your mother, who you haven’t seen since your marriage five years ago. The eight to ten hour walk has been too dangerous because of near-constant fighting between various drug smugglers and terrorists. It is late afternoon and you having been walking for six hours when you come across this sign by the road.
4. What to do A. Ignore the sign. You’re almost there, and you really miss your family. Your children are very tired and hungry. Keep walking to your mother’s village. B. Conclude the sign is a warning of some sort. Turn back, and try to get home before dark, even though baby Khadija is hungry and crying and Fazil wants you to carry him. You don’t know when you might see your mother now.
5. The Sign It says “Land mines ahead.” If you chose option A, you and your children died. If you chose option B, you walked back to your village and reached it in the middle of the night.
6. Farzhana, 36 Your crops have failed two years in a row and you have no way to earn money to buy food for your ten children. You go to the nearest town to beg for money or food. You cannot get back home before dark. You need a place to stay for the night. You find two buildings with signs on them.
9. Results A. Harem. The madam forcibly employs for the night and you are raped several times. However, you make enough money to buy you family a yak and to replace the crops that were lost. B. Hostel. You have a safe place to sleep, but you must return empty-handed to your hungry children.
10. Ahmad, 14 Your parents have been killed and your village destroyed by an American drone. Because you are the oldest, you are now the sole provider for your five younger siblings. You take your family to a refugee camp. You are a devout Muslim who does not believe in killing, but you are angry with the Americans for killing your parents. After living in the camp for several months, a well-dressed man offers to take you to a school. You have three choices.
11. Choices A. Leave with the man. The refugee camp is overcrowded and someone else will be glad to take your place. Your 12 year old brother, Yunus promises to take care of the younger children. If you get an education, you will be able to provide better for them. B. Stay with your younger siblings and send Yunus with the man. As the oldest, it is your responsibility to take care of your siblings, and Yunus deserves to go to school C. Decide it is best to keep your family together, and decline the man’s offer, even though you desperately want to learn.
12. Results A. Easily manipulated by your anger and ignorance, you are persuaded that God will reward you if you die a martyr. You blow yourself up in a crowded market. B. After two years you go looking for Yunus with your sisters. You inadvertently get caught between two fighting warlords, and die. C. Due to a lack of clean water, cholera breaks out in the camp. Your whole family gets sick and dies.
