2. 1930s Horror Film Overview The horror films of this decade could be described as ‘exotic fairy tales’ with characters often being inhuman, hence the surge in monster appearances! – This bought more and more people into the cinemas as they came in to see what monsters the film had in store! (An example of monsters being successful in this era was the birth of several old classics including Dracula, Frankenstein, King Kong and The Mummy.) Films in the 1930s stood by one of Todorov’s identified horror films; The marvellous – it contained things out of this world (e.g. Zombies etc) that would require the audience to suspend their judgement on the film.

3. 1930s Horror Films - Introduction of Sound & Increase in Technology The start of the 1930s bought sound and music into the horror film industry. Music started being used to build suspense etc so the audience knew that something scary may be about to happen while sound simply meant the characters could talk as well as being able to scream! This increase in technology bought experimentation to the industry hence the very large ape in King Kong!

4. 1930s Horror Films – Camera Angles Universal Studios starting using low tilted camera angles but more importantly excessive shadows so back stood out from white and vice versa, this was particularly important in the late 1920s before speech and sound was introduced.
