Making Meaning in Audio-Visual texts

1. ● Mise en Scene – a bone yard – we have had a glimpse of this
before the characters saw it, it's there as Juno climbs up the
rock face just before this but no attention is drawn to it. Now
they are looking at it through the infrared setting on the
camera (a clever cinematography device to let us see in the
dark).
● Narrative connotations – another big turning point just
coming up – something must have made this...

2. ● Cinematography – slow zoom in on Juno shows us that she is
the one being looked to for leadership, she is in charge. This is
the first time her leadership is lacking, she says she doesn't
know which way to go.
● Alternatively, the slow shot on her reminds the audience that
she is responsible for this and she knows it – she has led them
here (although she had no idea what they were going to find) –
it ties back in with the shot of her as she puts away the guide
book before they entered the caves.

3. ● Mise en scene working with cinematography – the sudden
appearance of the crawler in the back of the shot after a moving
camera sequence as the women start to panic and the camera darts
around.
● Narrative – this is the big turning point in the film, from 'We're lost
and we're in trouble' to 'These things are out to get us and we're in
trouble (and we're lost)'
● Genre – this is the big turning point to monster horror – there have
been clear elements of supernatural horror before (Sarah's dreams)
and action/adventure horror, but it's monster horror that will drive
the second half of the film
