3. Abstract
Most say there is no single best way to teach terms and
phrases. However, the research and theory on vocabulary
development does point to a few generalizations that provide
strong guidance. The Tennessee Department of Education
Division of Teaching and Learning recommends six steps in
teaching each of the TN Academic Vocabulary terms or
concept.
Participants will focus on teaching strategies, based upon the
recommended six steps, utilizing original pictures and user-
friendly tech tools. Examples created by preservice teachers
will be shared.
7. 6 Steps
The first three steps are to assist the teacher in direct
instruction. The last three steps are to provide the
learner practice and reinforcement.
8. Step 1:
The teacher will give a description, explanation, or
example of the new term.

9. Step 2:
The teacher will ask the learner to give a
description, explanation, or example of the new term in
his/her own words.
