Energy efficient choices can save families about a third on their energy bill with similar
savings of greenhouse gas emissions, without sacrificing features, style or comfort.
ENERGY STAR helps you make the energy efficient choice.
If looking for new household products, look for ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR.
They meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection
Agency EPA and US Department of Energy.
If looking for a new home, look for one that has earned the ENERGY STAR.
If looking to make larger improvements to your home, Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) offers tools and resources to help you plan and undertake projects to reduce your
energy bills and improve home comfort.
Energy Efficiency Purpose
 The purpose of energy efficient appliances and motors is to
be able to supply the same level of energy service only using
  less energy.

 Efficient energy use is achieved primarily by means of a
more efficient technology or process rather than by changes
  in individual behavior.

 Energy conservation reduces the energy consumption and
energy demand per capita and thus offsets some of the
growth in energy supply needed to keep up with population
  growth
Making a Difference
 Along with saving money, energy efficient appliances and
  motors save the plant
 The energy used to run a product can be cut up to 80%
 There is a large potential to make a difference because all
appliances energy usage can be cut
    Fridges, washers, dryers, cars
 Light bulbs, anything that plugs
     Into an outlet.
Buy energy efficient
It may seem like there's little you can do to cut the
amount of electricity you use – after all, few of us
could function without a fridge or washing machine,
and that Sunday roast won't cook itself.
But choosing more energy-efficient appliances can
cut your electricity bills. Most white goods and
common kitchen appliances have an energy-
efficiency rating (A to G), through a scheme
organized by the European Union(EU). For cold
appliances such as fridge-freezers look for A++ or A+
ratings.
Moving toward Energy-Efficient
Appliances
Energy Star is an international standard for energy
efficient consumer products originated in the United States of
America. It was first created as a United States government
program during the early 1990s, but Australia, Canada, Japan,
New Zealand, Taiwan and the European Union have also
adopted the program. Devices carrying the Energy Star logo,
such as computer products, kitchen appliances, buildings and
other products, generally use 20%–30% less energy than required
by federal standards. However, many European-targeted
products are labeled using a different standard, TCO
Certification, a combined energy usage and rating from the
Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO) instead
of Energy Star
If you are looking to buy new energy efficient appliances for your kitchen, there are a
couple of ways to make sure that you are getting a good deal in terms of energy
saving. All appliances are now rated using the EU Energy label so it is easy to spot
energy efficient appliances. In addition the Energy Saving Recommended logo from
the Energy Saving Trust is applied to certain products.
ElEcTronic BAllAsT
Energy Efficient Ballasts can be easily replaced with existing
conventional choke, you will derive following benefits -
Power Saving 30 - 50%.
Increases tube life by about 70%.
Ballast life is approx 50,000 hrs as against 10,000 hrs of
 conventional choke.
Flicker free start and No blackening of walls.
Works at input voltage as low as 70V
  and as high as 340V.
Payback Period is less than Two Years.
Power Line Quality
Total Harmonics distortion as low as 10%.
Third Harmonics as low as 4%.
Power Factor as high as 0.99.
Two Years Warranty
Compact Fluorescent Lamp
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL; also
called compact fluorescent light, energy
-saving light, and compact fluorescent
tube) is a Fluorescent Lamp designed
to replace an incandescent lamp; some
types fit into light fixtures formerly used
 for incandescent lamps.
Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the
same amount of visible light, CFLs use less power (typically one
fifth) and have a longer rated life (six to ten times average). In
most countries, a CFL has a higher purchase price than an
incandescent lamp, but can save over five times its purchase
price in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime. Like all
fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain mercury, which complicates
their disposal. In many countries, governments have
established recycling schemes for CFLs and glass generally.
LED Lighting
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are solid light bulbs
which are extremely energy-efficient. When first
developed, LEDs were limited to single-bulb use
in applications such as instrument panels, electr-
onics, pen lights and, more recently, strings of indoor and outdoor
Christmas lights . Manufacturers have expanded the application of LEDs by
"clustering" the small bulbs. The first clustered bulbs were used for battery
powered items such as flashlights and headlamps. Today, LED bulbs are
made using as many as 180 bulbs per cluster, and encased in diffuser
lenses which spread the light in wider beams. Now available with standard
bases which fit common household light fixtures, LEDs are the next
 generation in home lighting.
Energy Efficient Motor
Energy efficient motors are
manufactured using the same frame as
a standard T-frame motor, but these
have : Higher quality and thinner steel
laminations in the stator.
More copper in the windings.
Optimized air gap between the rotor
and stator.
Reduced fan loses.
Closer matching tolerances.
A greater length.
Cast-resin Dry-type Transformers
GEAFOL distribution and power
transformers
in ratings from 100 to more than
20 000 kVA and LI values up to
170 kV
are full substitutes for oil-
immersed transformers
with comparable electrical and
mechanical data.
GEAFOL transformers are
designed for
indoor installation close to their
point of
use at the center of the major
consumers.
Solar water heating
 Solar water heating (SWH) or solar
 hot water (SHW) systems comprise
several innovations and many mature
 renewable energy technologies that
have been well established for many
years. SWH has been widely used in
 Greece, Turkey, Israel, Australia,
Japan, Austria and China. In a
 "close-coupled" SWH system
the storage tank is horizontally
 mounted immediately above
the solar collectors on the roof.
No pumping is required as the hot water naturally rises into the tank
through thermosiphon flow. In a "pump-circulated" system the storage tank
is ground or floor mounted and is below the level of the collectors; a
circulating pump moves water or heat transfer fluid between the tank and the
collectors.
SWH systems are designed to deliver hot water for most of the year.
   However,
in winter there sometimes may not be sufficient solar heat gain to deliver
sufficient hot water. In this case a gas or electric booster is normally used to
heat the water.
Electronic Fan Regulator
 Electronic Fan Regulator that is extensively
used to regulate and control the speed of the
fans. Electronic fan regulator is an electronic
device consisting of diacs, triacs, potentiome-
tric resistance to provide stepless control of
fan speed. This is an energy saving device
and has advantages over the conventional
type of fan regulators having more energy
losses. These regulators can also be used as a speed regulator for many
other small F.H.P. motors used in mixer, laboratory solution mixer etc, with
appropriate current ratings.
Advantages of Energy-Efficient
Equipment
More than half the electricity used to power computer sis wasted. EPA estimates that
a 1,000 computer office could typically save 200,000 kWh by enabling monitor power
management features – That’s about $20,000 a year or emissions from 27 cars.
Turning computers off at night can double savings to 400,000 kWh.
lEAdErship
When you specify ENERGY STAR equipment, you are following the lead of State
government’s . Governor Pataki’s Executive Order 111 (Green and Clean State
    Buildings
and Vehicles) sets specific goals for saving energy and requires that State entities
purchase ENERGY STAR equipment. Several progressive New York State jurisdictions,
like Erie County, are adopting energy efficiency mandates. You can continue this trend
and be recognized as a leader by your constituents.
cosT sAvings
By using ENERGY STAR office equipment, your utility bills will be significantly reduced
and maintenance costs will be lower. For example, ENERGY STAR computers typically
use half the electricity of
standard computers if they are enabled and turned off at night. And, there is often
no purchase premium
when buying these products. ENERGY STAR products allow you to reallocate taxpayer
dollars to meet
the needs that your constituents value most, for little or no capital investment.

EnvironmEnTAl rEsponsiBiliTy
Because it uses less energy, ENERGY STAR equipment produces less greenhouse gas
emissions, resulting in a cleaner, healthier environment. In addition, ENERGY STAR
products save natural resources (coal, oil and natural gas). The U.S. EPA estimates
that the energy saved over the life of 50 high-volume ENERGY STAR copiers is
equivalent to removing the annual emissions of 40 cars from the highway.
EAsE of purchAsing
Most New York counties already buy office products using New York
State Office of General Services (NYOGS) contracts, which require
ENERGY STAR compliance. NYOGS contracts satisfy New York State’s
competitive bidding requirements.
