This document outlines steps for flipping a classroom presented by Drs. Negin Mirriahi and Abelardo Pardo at the Connections Seminar at UNSW on August 5, 2014. It discusses what flipping a classroom means, challenges that may be encountered, and provides a four step process for developing a flipped classroom plan that includes identifying learning outcomes, determining pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities, and strategies for evaluation. References are also provided on previous research studies that have investigated the impact of flipped classrooms.

Discuss at your table...
1) How did you find the ideas presented in the
videos?
2) What did you learn that you could apply in your
context?
3) What might be some of the challenges?

STEP 1
Find a partner and share the learning outcome.
Suitable for single lesson, and measurable!
Share your current approach (activities,
assessments)
If new outcome, discuss initial ideas.

STEP 2
Brainstorm: Which components could be
flipped?
What advantages does being face-to-face
provide? For which activities?
What activities could be best done prior to class?
What activities could be best done after?
Individually or Collaboratively?
How will students demonostrate their learning?

STEP 3
Large Group Discussion
How would you flip your class?
What challenges may you encounter?
How will you overcome them?

STEP 4
Complete the Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

Note down pre, during, and post activities.

Considerations for flipped learning activities
• Your measurable learning outcome
• Activities best done prior to class
• Activities in class to maximise potential of
face-to-face interaction
• Activities done post-class, independently
or collaboratively
• Assessment tasks to measure students’
learning
