2. Birth Story
• Son of the Titans Cronos and Rhea.
• Cronos’s father prophesied “You murder me now and steal my
throne- but one of your own sons will dethrone you, for crime
begets crime.”
• Cronos was very careful after this and made sure he ate all of
his children as they were born.
• Rhea was very angry and decided she would have Zeus in a
dark place so Cronos would not know about him.
• Rhea took Zeus to a safe place
3. Birth Story Continued
• After this she took a rock and wrapped it in swaddling clothes.
• Cronos ate the rock thinking it was Zeus.
• Rhea gave Zeus to a Sheppard family so that he would be safe.
• Rhea eventually went back to get Zeus and introduced him to
Cronos as the new cupbearer.
• Rhea and Zeus prepared a special drink for Cronos that made
him vomit up his other children.
• They thanked Zeus and immediately chose him to be their
leader.
4. Birth Story Continued
• Then a battle began and Cronos was joined by the
Titans.
• They attacked the young Gods, but Zeus had allies to fight
back.
• As the God’s fought, people on earth heard thunder and saw
mountains shatter. The earth also quacked and tidal waves
rolled.
• Cronos attacked fiercely, but Zeus had a trap.
• The Titans broke ranks and fled because they thought the
mountain was falling on them.
• Young goat- god Pan shouted with joy.
• Zeus and the other Gods claimed Olympus.

• Zeus became terrified and ate Metis.
• The 2nd child was actually born a girl, Athena.

• Zeus later developed a terrible headache.
• Zeus consulted the other gods and Hermes realized what
needed to be done.
• Hermes told Hephaestus to take a wedge and split open
Zeus’s skull.
• When this happened Athena sprang out of Zeus’s head.

Rhea: crept down slope of Olympus, Safe place was in a golden cradle hung from branches of olive tree, put Zeus to sleep
Rhea: Went back up to mountain, held the rock like baby to breasts and sang lullaby
Cronos: came from bed
Rhea: went down into fields to Sheppard family to raise promising that their sheep would never be eaten by wolves, here Zeus grew up and became beautiful, Rhea got lonely for him, Cronos was so impressed because Zeus was so beautiful
Rhea and Zeus: one night prepared drink made of mustard, salt, and nectar, next morning Cronos drank, being gods were not digested
Titans: his half brother, huge, twisted, dark creatures taller than trees. Kept them pent up in the mountains until there was fighting to be done
Zeus: went to darker caverns, deep in mountainside. Here Cronos had pent up other monsters, one eyed Cyclopes and 100 handed one. Zeus unshackled monsters and led against titans
Trap: halfway down the slope of Olympus Zeus whistled for his monsters who were lying in ambush. Took huge boulders, 100 each and threw them downhill at titans. Titans thought the mountain was falling on them.
Pan: later said it was his shout that made the Titans flee, where we get word panic
Gods: Zeus became leader, took over. No one knows what happened to Titans
5 siblings: Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera
4 enemies: Cronos, Titans, Typhon (monster and god, feared by gods, last child of Gaia (earth) and Tartarus (bottomless pit), Echidna, a monstrous she-dragon with the head and breast of a woman.
