Nutritional Approach to Arthritis
Because arthritis is an inflammatory disease, you need to eat foods with anti-
inflammatory actions such as omega 3 fatty acids. Here is a short hit list;
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
Eat omega 3-rich oily fish, or nuts and seeds such as pumpkin and sesame
several times a week, and up your intake of complex carbohydrates such as
grains, fruits, peas and beans, and especially dark green leafy vegetables.
ANTI-OXIDANTS
You should also eat plenty of red and purple berries as these are packed
with antioxidants – such as strawberry, blackberry and blueberry, along
with alkalizing greens which help regulate an alkaline environment in the
gut. It may also help to avoid wheat as this can lead to inflammation and
aggravate symptoms, as can other pro–inflammatory foods such as
tomatoes. Finally, studies have shown that vegetarian meals may ease inflammation, so
cutting out meat, especially red meat, is strongly advised. Supplements such as Eskimo 3
capsules or Omega Sufficiency Oils can provide a useful, convenient source of these
essential Omega 3 oils, which the body cannot produce. Flax seed for vegetarians.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY SUPPLEMENTS
Where there is joint damage or wear and tear through calcification or inflammation
Glucosamine and Chondroitin can be supplemented to help rebuild cartilage and reduce
inflammation. Clinical trials have shown that benefits are seen more consistently with at
least 1500mg of glucosamine. Bromelin, as well as root ginger, turmeric and the herb
boswelia have anti inflammatory properties . Check with our nutritional advisor on
potency levels and added vitamin partners.
ENZYME THERAPY
There has long been a natural alternative to medicinal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as
ibuprofen and more potent NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) Histological
studies reveal powerful anti-inflammatory effects with a naturally occurring enzyme
called Serrapeptase. Serrapeptase digests non-living tissue (such as scar tissue) blood
clots, cysts and arterial plaque and inflammation in all forms. Visit the website

THE K-TEST - FOOD INTOLERANCE AND SENSITIVITY TEST
This test provides a useful insight into potential food sensitivities and intolerances that
can lead to a pro-inflammatory state. It will also produce a dietary profile which will
identify any deficiencies in digestive enzymes which have a crucial role to play in gut
health as well as optimal nerve, cell and tissue function. For more information on any
of the above please ask at reception or book an appointment with our nutrition
advisor.
