Swing dance clothes originated from 1940s styles and can range from simple to flashy, reflecting the varied dance steps. While zoot suits were initially popular for young men in the 1940s, they caused controversy due to using excess fabric during wartime rationing. Modern swing dance attire focuses on comfort and breathability, consisting of loose, layered clothing that allows freedom of movement and prevents overheating from the physical exertion of swing dancing.

Swing dance costume
1. Swing dance clothes are fun and
varied, much like the dance steps that
go along with them. Rooted in 1940s
style, swing dancing attire can range
from the simple to the flashy.
2. While the zoot suit continued to be a
popular choice for young men going swing
dancing, they caused quite a controversy.
The United States was in the throes of
World War II, and fabric was rationed and
often difficult to come by. Since zoot suits
require a tremendous amount of fabric to
be sewn properly, those who were seen in
them were often judged by older
generations as greedy and defiant.

4. Today's swing dance clothes usually consist of
whatever is comfortable and convenient. It's
recommended that a novice swing dancer wear loose-
fitting, breathable clothing. Swing dancing can be very
physically exerting, and it doesn't take long to work up a
considerable sweat. For this reason, swing attire should
not be too warm, and ideally should consist of layers.
