2. ZEWIPRO, Zero Emission Wine Production, is a cooperation project funded by
the Eco-Innovation Program in the priority area of Food and Drink.
The Eco-Innovation Program is an initiative of the European Union within of
the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Program - CIP.
The objective of the project is to introduce a new technology on the wine production’s
market that will reduce the emission of CO2 released during the fermentation process,
giving the opportunity to cellars of entering a very profitable business as the algaegiving the opportunity to cellars of entering a very profitable business as the algae
growing one.
Partners involved in the project are: Asteria (Italy), ENCO Engineering and
Consulting (Italy), AlgaeLink (the Netherlands), Fazi Battaglia (Italy), Bodegas Solar
Viejo de Laguardia (Spain) and Château Mont Redon (France).

3. The Work Program can be summarized as follows:
Wp1: Management
Wp2: Plant Construction Executive Plans
Wp3: Realization and start up plant
Wp4: Elaboration of results and writing technical reports
Wp5: Exploitation and business plan
Wp6: Dissemination activities

Wp6: Dissemination activities
Expected results
- Decrease of the emission of carbon dioxide
- Implementation of a zero emission wine production
- Developing algae market
- Commercialization of a new technology
- Repetition of the project in other sectors having similar features
4. The first year of the project was characterized by a partial development of the expected
results. Operational issues delayed the progress of some WPs, in particular WP3 and
WP4. The Consortium is solving its problems through a strong communication and a
fruitful collaboration.
Mains activities carried out for each WP are listed below.
WP1 Management (M1-M30)

Two Trans-National meetings were held: the First (KO) on September 20th, 2011, Yerseke,
NL at the presence of the PO Ms. Anita Fassio; the second on November 9th, 2011,
Castelplanio Stazione, IT. During the implementation of the project the Consortium
was in contact by e-mails, phone and Skype to better manage the activities ongoing.
As planned in the Grant Agreement, Asteria, with the participation of all partners, have
produced the 1st Progress Report in which the following aspects were highlighted:
Progress of work plan in the period, Progress regarding market uptake and exploitation,
Work plan for the next period.
5. WP2 Plant construction executive plans (M1-M6)
After sending the Plant process specification (D2.1), and receiving it from the 3 cellars,
also with Wine cellar technical surveys (D2.2- received by Fazi Battaglia, Solar Viejo and
Mont Redon cellars), Asteria, in strict collaboration with AlgaeLink, started to produce
the Executive Projects (D2.3) for cellars. All activities planned for this WP were carried
out as scheduled.
WP3 – Construction realization and start up plant (M7–M20)
Because of some technical problems incurred, AlgaeLink didn’t have time to finish

Because of some technical problems incurred, AlgaeLink didn’t have time to finish
building the 3 photo-bioreactors in order to install them in the cellar for the harvest
2012 as planned in the first Gantt Chart. It partially built the second photo-bioreactor.
WP4 – Elaboration of results and writing final technical and commercial reports
(M21-M24)
WP4 will start on M21.
6. WP5 – Exploitation and Business Plan (M7-M30)
Asteria helped ENCO in the realization of some activities: search activities of European
potential commercial partners; telephone contacts with dealers of machinery for
wineries, agricultural associations and associations of wine producers. A first collection
of information and data allowed ENCO to start working on the Market Analysis (D5.1)
and the Exploitation Strategy (D5.2). Enco completed these documents as drafts in
order to add other consideration during next months.
WP6 - Dissemination Activities (M1 – M30)

WP6 - Dissemination Activities (M1 – M30)
All partners contribute to the dissemination and updating of the tasks under this WP.
ENCO produced the Communication and Dissemination Plan (D6.6) and the
ZEWIPRO website (D6.9) – www.zewipro.com - as planned in the Grant Agreement.
The website will be updated during all the project lifecycle. Fazi Battaglia cellar attended
to the international meeting Vinitaly (Verona, 25-28 March) where it presented the
innovative features of ZEWIPRO technology.
7. Work plan for the next period
The next Trans-National Project Meetings will take place in the head office of
Chateau Mont Redon. The Consortium will work on the Interim Report (M15) in order
to present it to the EACI; the third photo-bioreactor will be built and the 3 will be
installed in each wine cellar in order to begin the start up phase. After the installation,
Asteria and Algaelink technicians will provide the training of the technical personnel of
the cellars, in order to monitor and provide to the algae collection; then the trained
technicians will also provide to the plant maintenance. Enco will work on the list of
potential commercial partner (D5.3) and will start the production of the Layman’s
