CBEC JOBSITE VISIT
The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry (CBEC) Building is a $126 million
building that has 225,000 gross sq. ft. The construction site is between Woodruff and 19th Street on
The Ohio State University campus. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 18, 2012.
Gilbane Inc. is the head construction company. So far, the floors that have concrete placed are the
ground floor, first floor, second floor, third floor, and they are working on the fourth floor now
getting all the scaffolding and rebar in place. The structural dimensions, floor-to-floor height, and
environmental stability are crucial in this project to support the research that is planned to occur
within this building. The CBEC Building is going to be a “green” building by having a LEED Silver
rating. It is expected to be finished by the end of 2014.
There were several issues that I came up with for this project that took some thought and
figuring before the project began. The first issue that came to mind was where large trucks and
equipment could park on the site. Being right in the middle of one of the most crowded places on
campus during the day, there isn’t much room to park equipment or materials. There are buildings on
both sides of the site and roads on the other two sides. Not only are the buildings and roadways in
the way, but Gilbane has to leave pathways for students to walk to their classes. This issue of having
very little room to work with brings me to my next point.
2. With there being little room to work, there comes the problem of getting longer trucks to turn
into the site. The roads are only so wide for the trucks to make their wide turns into the site.So the
problem arises of trucks cannot get into the site to drop off materials. Therefore, needed materials
are stuck outside of the site. The outside perimeter of the site is fenced off which helps keep
trespassers like students out of the site. This is the third and probably most important issue that
needed solved.
In order to solve the issue of not having room to store material, if the material is brought in and
immediately put up into the building, then it doesn’t have to be stored some place. Obviously this
isn’t always possible, so maybe some of the materials can be stored in the actual building floors. A
solution to not being able to have trucks pull into the site is to have the trucks come during the
middle of the night and park in the street. This way they do not have to come into the site, and if
they unload at night, then the trucks block a very minimal amount of traffic. The solution to help
keep out trespassers is the fence that is around the site. The fence doesn’t keep everyone out, but it
does at least slow them down.

3. As you can tell from this picture, the
site goes right up to the sidewalk and
almost to the street itself. This makes
it tough to park equipment and pull
into the site, so a way to fix it is to
have trucks park on the streets in the
middle of the night and unload
material then. Also, here is the fence
that helps keep out trespassers.
