IPython: A Modern Vision of Interactive Computing (PyData SV 2013)

DataPlotly is a plugin for QGIS that allows to create D3 like plots from spatial data. It is build on top of plotly, a javascript library which offers easy API for many languages such as Python, R, Matlab and NodeJS. The plugin was created back in 2017 for the upcoming QGIS 3 version: today the plugin has been downloaded more than 50,000 times. Creating plots is out of the main scopes of QGIS but thanks to the simple Python API it is easy enough to create additional scripts and plugins. Thanks to these APIs, DataPlotly is today a well maintained Python plugin with a growing community of developers, users and testers. DataPlotly plots are completely interactive so that plot elements are directly linked with map items; therefore the user is able to query map items from the main plot canvas. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign launched in March 2019 during the annual QGIS User Conference, the functionalities of DataPlotly were extended: a complete refactoring of the code, more plots but especially the creation of plots in the layout composer. More and more people are using the plugin to analyze the data and to create complex output reports of data (e.g. the Covid-19 pandemic

Deep Learning has taken the world of Computer Science by storm yet for many of us it remains an elusive sci-fi-like buzzword. After years of feature engineering in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, we have finally come to the point where, we can feed raw data to a Neural Network, similar to how our brains work, and expect results that can surprise us in their high accuracy. This talk is about de-mystifying Deep Learning for developers many of whom could benefit from understanding and using Deep Learning in their day-to-day job. It covers the background and brief theoretical grounds in the first third but shows actual working code and examples in the rest. We will overview convolutional Neural Networks and then cover network design techniques such as pooling, dropout and local connections. The examples of this talk are in Keras and aimed to build real-world models in the field of Natural Language Processing.

Julia is steadily gaining popularity in the field of data science and visualization. Plotting capabilities are provided by packages such as Gadfly and PyPlot. They are the workhorse plotting utilities of the scientific Julia world. However, depending on the field of application, the software may be reaching its limits. This is the point where the GR framework will help. GR can be used as an alternative graphics module and significantly improve the performance and expand the capabilities of visualization applications. Julia is an accepted high-level scripting language for scientific computing and visualization, not least because of the proliferation of libraries such as Gadfly and PyPlot. However, when processing large amounts of data, in particular in combination with three-dimensional plotting (OpenGL), the existing graphics packages are too application-specific or seem to be reaching their limits. In particular, large amounts of data or the visualization of three-dimensional scenes may overwhelm the system. This presentation shows how visualization applications with special performance requirements can be designed on the basis of GR, a high-performance visualization library for Linux, OS X and Windows. The lecture also introduces a new graphics backend for PyPlot based on the GR framework. By combining the power of those libraries the responsiveness of animated visualization applications and their resulting frame rates can be improved significantly. This in turn allows the use of PyPlot in real-time environments, for example in the area of signal processing. Using concrete examples, the presentation will demonstrate the benefits of the GR framework for high-performance graphics or as a companion module for PyPlot. Based on selected applications, the suitability of the GR framework will be highlighted especially in environments where time is critical. The system’s performance capabilities will be illustrated using demanding live applications. In addition, the special abilities of the GR framework are emphasized in terms of interoperability with OpenGL, which opens up new possibilities for existing applications.

Presented on Friday, 13 July 2018 at the ITP Conference in Wellington, New Zealand Kiwis can't express their identity digitally and securely across cultural backgrounds, across competitive boundaries. This is an ongoing, permanent problem so far. Yes, there are ways for it, e.g. using RealMe, Google federated identity, etc. But they all have their "warts". Some are expensive or cumbersome to use from an organisation's perspective. Others are leaking meta-data to corporates, whose goal is to use your information to be able to sell to you in a better way, thus making the end user The Product (TM). Yet others are lacking critical mass among the population to be successful. A Bloomberg Intelligence's Report ("The year Ahead 2018") is quoting the cost for the US banking sector for KYC (Know Your Customer) or AML (Anty Money Laundering) breaches to total US$ 16.1 billion from 2008 to 2015. The same report cites the Royal Bank of Scotland to employ 2,000 staff (early 2017) exclusively to comply with KYC rules, with the expectation to lower this headcount by 95% given a viable digital solution. Due to the magnitude of this problem, a local major bank has kicked off an initiative with the local community to venture into solution opportunities. This paper presents the background to the problem statement, the goal definition and particularly the approach taken for the system. Design decisions and evaluations will be discussed for this system under the project title of "Kauri ID", a self-sovereign, blockchain-based identity infrastructure. It puts the user at the centre, and no company or organisation owns identity information or acts as a (formal) guardian. Kauri ID employs privacy by design, enabling fine-granular, selective and confidential data sharing. Authenticity is implemented via a web of trust, attesting identity attribute claims. Even though Kauri ID is inherently self-sovereign, sovereign aspects can be catered for via governmental attribute endorsements, thus building a bridge between New Zealand's RealMe system and Kauri ID.
