Year this product (version 1.0) was originally released: 1995
AcroTrain was developed as a computer-based training program that would present and fully
document training completion, making it easy for developers to create and update courses.
The decision was made by the developer to keep the content presentations in native
PowerPoint files, with the idea that no conversions means no loss of functionality. All
PowerPoint transition effects, animations, builds, and macros work with AcroTrain. The
AcroTrain course model features courses with modules that have topics and optional
objectives. Topics have formative and exam questions and optional objectives.
The overall philosophy is to permit the "lone trainer" to create, publish, and manage courses
with little or no additional support. IT support is not needed when publishing to CD-ROM or on
stand-alone computers. Setting up on a company intranet usually requires some IT support.
Web-based delivery options require the most support.
Once the system is established, the "lone trainer," developers, and administrators can manage
learners and add/modify courses with no additional support. Although many developers use
the default settings, AcroTrain provides controls to allow the developer to control the learning
environment without programming or outside support.
The AcroEdit module permits developers to define the e-learning system environment, build
courses, and edit questions in various formats. In addition to the video, sound, animation, and
links provided by PowerPoint, AcroEdit also can associate HTML files with each course topic.
This functions to provide glossaries, background information, or detailed manuals organized as
an electronic performance support system. The EPSS (electronic performance support system)
can be made available for learners when they complete the training and return to the job.

Question types supported by AcroTrain include true/false, yes/no, multiple-choice, drag-and-
drop, matching, and fill-in assessment questions. All question types can use the supplemental
information feature to present in-depth analyses and graphic questions. "Hint" and "More"
features enable developers to supplement their questions with definitions of terms or
acronyms and other background information that some learners may need to properly
understand a question. Questions have slightly different features and appearances based on
their use as formative, exam, or survey questions. The formative questions can include a
review function to return learners to a particular slide in the PowerPoint presentation or a
custom remediation by launching a PowerPoint, HTML, or .exe file.
The AcroEdit publish function permits developers to create CD-ROM disk view files and to
export their courses to network locations. The CD-ROM export can be designed to run directly
from the disk view and return records to the administrator through e-mail or other file transfer
methods.
AcroAdmin is the tool used to develop assessments and manage learners.
Assessment types include standard fixed question exams, paper exams, randomly generated
exams, surveys, critiques, practical exercises, and several options to present pre-tests that
automatically give partial or full course credit. Pre-testing can use question keywords to base
credit on objectives or other attributes. Developers define the examination flow and control the
results shown to learners. They can provide immediate feedback on the correct answer as
learners complete each question, and they can present an exam review upon assessment
completion. Options to create Excel summary report files and to automatically update external
records systems on exam completion are included. Access codes can be provided to a proctor
or directly to learners. Developers may require that exams be completed in one session.
AcroEdit permits exams to be launched in the audit mode to enable developers to fully
experience the exam as a learner would without making a permanent record. Assessment
completion report options include assessment specific instructions based on the assessment
results.
AcroAdmin learner management features control learner registration and report training
results. Administrators can pre-register learners into the AcroTrain system individually or import
them from existing records systems. They can also register them for courses and update their
records for external courses such as instructor-led courses, on-the-job training, or other
qualification requirements. Standard reports are available with various filtering options using
dates and learner attributes. Administrators can remove learners and specific records.
AcroAdmin also allows developers to view, print, and export detailed course settings and
June 2009

questions.
The AcroTrain run-time engine features three operating modes: standard, audit, and instructor-
led. The standard mode is used for normal course presentations. Developers can present an
introductory screen and closing screen. They can also include objectives in the course
presentation flow. Learners control their flow through the courses; they can go directly to
formative questions or can view presentations before seeing the questions. Developers can
limit access to topics and modules by assigning prerequisites. In the audit mode, a learner
experiences the course as if he/she were taking it for credit, but a permanent record is not
retained. Administrators may permit auditors to access courses without using the standard log-
in process. In the instructor-led mode, AcroTrain does not record responses, prerequisites are
removed, and keyboard combinations allow instructors to skip or correctly answer questions.
AcroTrain generates an optional review module based on which formative questions learners
answered correctly on the first attempt.
AcroTrain content management capabilities permit developers to share content with multiple
courses. This is used frequently for subjects that have multiple qualification levels.

With Adobe Captivate, anyone can easily develop robust e-learning content. The software
enables authors to get up and running quickly with its intuitive point-and-click user interface, a
start page with access to handy tutorials, and many time-saving features such as automated
text captions, a find and replace feature, and automatic rerecording of Web applications in
Internet Explorer. In a single recording session, authors can create multiple learner modes
such as demonstrations with mouse movements and text descriptions of each recorded task,
practice simulations with instructional feedback, and assessments with scored user
interactions.
In addition to software training, authors can quickly develop soft-skills simulations and work
with the visual branching view to map out learner paths. Even Adobe Flash(R) developers can
save time by quickly capturing screen tasks in Adobe Captivate and then exporting their
content to Adobe Flash software for further authoring or advanced editing.
The finished simulations are published to the .SWF format and can be used with other e-
learning authoring tools and Adobe Acrobat(R) Connect(TM) Professional, Adobe Presenter, and
the Questionmark Perception assessment tool.
Authors can develop highly engaging e-learning experiences without programming or
multimedia skills. It's easy to increase the effectiveness of simulations by adding interactivity --
including quizzing, text entry fields with multiple correct answer options, click boxes, keyboard
shortcuts, and buttons -- anywhere in a project, complete with scoring and branching.
Learners stay engaged with seamlessly integrated audio and video, effects such as the rich-
media rollover slidelet, animated slide transitions, and support for many Microsoft PowerPoint

animations.
Authors can also create complex scenarios and display different learner paths in a branching
view. Authors can insert multiple interactions and objects into a single slide, enabling multiple
choices or complex realistic simulations, and can choose from a many quiz question types,
including sequencing, short answer, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, matching, and image hotspots.
When recording software training, Adobe Captivate automatically adds scored interactions and
instructional feedback. The software automatically generates an Adobe Flash Player
compatible SWF file from slide-based content, complete with pre-loader and play-back controls
-- no Flash software knowledge or programming skills are required.
Due to the .SWF output, authors can deliver rich e-learning content to virtually anyone,
anytime, anywhere.
Using this format, it's easy to create high-quality content while maintaining a small file size. The
flexible output formats include e-mailing projects; posting them on a Web site, a blog, or an
intranet; or publishing them to an online help system.
Rich, interactive projects can be delivered through Flash Player, which is already installed on
over 97 percent of Internet-connected desktops, to stream interactive projects to virtually
anyone, anywhere, anytime -- no cumbersome software downloads required. It is also easy to
leverage existing resources by integrating simulations with other e-learning tools. Adobe
Captivate supports SCORM 2004, SCORM 1.2, AICC, and PENS to deploy simulations through
any learning management system (LMS).

Year this product (version 1.0) was originally released: 1991
Macromedia Authorware is an authoring system that has adapted over the years for the Web
and online learning. It enables training developers, instructional designers, and subject matter
experts to create interactive, media-rich content for delivery on the Web, corporate networks,
and CD-ROMs.
Developers drag icons from a palette to a flow line to create the logical outline of an
application. At each step in the process, Authorware prompts the developer for the content and
information it needs with menus and wizards. Authorware also includes a property inspector for
quicker and easier editing of icon properties. Authorware’s in-context editing allows authors to
pause an application at any point, edit media, add interactivity, change screen layout, and then
restart the application. Authorware’s drag-and-drop authoring allows the author to modify the
application’s structure, which is useful for rapid prototyping.
Authorware’s structure emphasizes interactivity. It incorporates the media types such as Flash
MX, QuickTime, MP3, and Windows Media Player support. Standard instructional capabilities
like assessments, hyperlinking information, and tracking student information are all available
without coding. The Authorware scripting language or standard JavaScript is available for
further customization. Authorware enables designers to create a broad range of training
applications, including simulations and scenario-based courseware.
Authorware’s Knowledge Track feature and LMS Knowledge Objects automates the
transmission of standard tracking information to any AICC/SCORM-compliant LMS. One-button
publishing integrates and automates the steps of the publishing process, making it possible to
deliver applications for the Web, CD-ROM, or corporate network. Compression, streaming, and

APIXEL Metamorphosis is an automated e-learning authoring system. Users provide the system
with their e-learning content in the form of a Microsoft Word document, and the system chunks
the content onto screens, inserts matching images from its own high-quality library, generates
learning activities, and outputs the resulting course in the desired Web-based format.
Metamorphosis now also provides the ability to import Microsoft PowerPoint slide shows.
Metamorphosis’ developers have analyzed the process according to which instructional
designers create e-learning courseware, and have removed the repetitive, taxing tasks and
fully automated them in the Metamorphosis system. Metamorphosis allows users to transform
their content into colorful interactive training in minutes.
Most people who want to train their staff beginning with a content document. The instructional
designer then chunks that information across screens and prescribes or searches for
appropriate graphics to illustrate the content on each screen. Metamorphosis automates that
laborious process. The user simply provides the content document in Word or PowerPoint
format and Metamorphosis does the rest. Metamorphosis draws on tens of thousands of high-
quality photographic and clip art images. The system automatically generates learning
activities, and multiple choice questions are integrated into the system. A simple four-step
interface guides the user through the lesson creation process. Once Metamorphosis finishes
the document conversion process, users can edit any of the resulting screens. The system has
all the usual options of adding various media and different question types to further enhance
the learning environment.
Metamorphosis is automated. Other systems require the user to build screens manually one-

by-one (though Metamorphosis also allows for the one-by-one screen creation, if desired),
choosing accompanying images or activities for each, but Metamorphosis does not require the
manual build.
Metamorphosis was particularly designed with the novice personal computer user in mind.
Essentially, if a user can use Word or PowerPoint, they can immediately use Metamorphosis to
convert Word documents or PowerPoint into colorful interactive e-learning tutorials.
Metamorphosis involves a four-step procedure:
1. Settings
2. Import
3. Edit
4. Publish
The system defaults deliver a polished complete product every time. In other words, simply by
importing their Word documents or PowerPoint, users are able to generate a completed e-
learning course with the click of a button.

Design-a-Course (DaC) was released in September 2002. DaC is a client-server e-learning
development tool with an integrated learning management system (LMS). The client
application is downloaded to a personal computer (PC) where courses can be created, stored,
modified, and, ultimately, uploaded to a server.
Brindle Waye offers two types of licenses: self-hosting and application service provider (ASP)
(Brindle Waye hosts on secure server).
The program is intended for course developers with little or no programming/scripting
experience. However, users with Dreamweaver or other HTML editing tool experience can
create their pages outside of DaC. All pages created are considered reusable learning objects
that can be stored and shared among developers.
The LMS, or server side, offers relational data on students including profile information and
test scores. Data can be compared for quick analysis.
DaC is SCORM 1.2- and 2004-compliant, and can be used with other SCORM-compliant LMSs.
DaC allows for easy import of PowerPoint slides and certificate generation.
