Prayers of Hope for a Renewed and Better World

December 1, 2013 9:00 a.m.
~Welcome~
Advent Confession and Forgiveness
P: In the name of the Father, and the
Son, and the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen
P: The Lord of Advent tells us to be
watchful for his coming, keeping our
lamps lighted, and our hearts clean.
All: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P: Let us confess to the Lord.
(time for silent reflection)
P: Gracious God…
All: We prepare our hearts for the coming
of Your Son, confessing our sins of
omission and commission, confessing
our lure into a world that knows not
the Christ of our preparations. Forgive
our sins, cleanse our hearts, and
keep us faithful and focused on the
promised coming of Your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
P: God sent Jesus, to show infinite love
and forgiveness for all. Our sins are
forgiven in the holy name of Christ
who came and will come again.
All: Amen.
Oh Little Town of
Bethlehem
ELW #279
O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie;
Above thy deep
and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets
shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears
of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary;
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep
the angels keep
Their watch of wond'ring love.
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth;
And praises sing
to God the king,
And peace to all the earth.
How silent, how silently
The wondrous gift is giv'n!
So God imparts
to human hearts
The blessings of his heav'n.
No ear may hear his coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls
will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of
Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin
and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord, Emmanuel.
LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE
P: The first candle of Advent is the
light of Hope.

All: Our hope is in God, and in
God’s son Jesus Christ. He is the
one appointed by God to be judge
of all things. He is the one through
whom God has promised to save
and redeem all people.
P: We light this candle today to
remind us that God is our hope.
All: To remember that God is
the only hope of the world. We
thank God for the promises He
has made to us and for the light
Christ has brought into the
world.
A CANDLE IS BURNING
( sung to tune of “Away in the Manger”)

A Candle is burning, a flame
warm and bright,
a candle of hope in the
winter’s dark night.
While angels sing blessing from
heaven's starry sky,
our hearts we prepare now for
Jesus is nigh.
P: Let us pray…
All: O God of Hope, we
pray you to send your
light into our hearts. Help
us to be ready for the day
and the hour of Christ's appearing.
Work in our hearts at this time and
help us prepare ourselves for the
hope that he brings – the hope that
assures us that we are united with
you in all the joys and trials of life…
..life now and everlasting. Bless our
worship that it may be pleasing to
you, and bless us that we may prove
to be your faithful servants. Amen.

Each Winter As
The Year Grows Older
ELW #252
Each winter as the year grows older,
we each grow older too.
The chill sets in a little colder;
the verities we knew
seem shaken and untrue.
When race and class
cry out for treason,
when sirens call for war,
they over shout the voice of reason
and scream till we ignore
all we held dear before.
Yet I believe beyond believing,
that life can spring from death;
that growth can flower from our grieving;
that we can catch our breath
and turn transfixed by faith.
So even as the sun is turning
to journey to the north,
the living flame, in secret burning,
can kindle on the earth
and bring God’s love to birth.
O Child of ecstasy and sorrows,
O Prince of peace and pain,
brighten today’s world by
tomorrow’s,
renew our lives again;
Lord Jesus, come and reign.
Baptism: Ella Amara Kartawidjaja

P: In Baptism our gracious heavenly
Father frees us from sin and death
by joining us to the death and
resurrection of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
We are born children of a fallen
humanity; by water and the Holy
Spirit we are reborn children of
God and made members of the
church, the body of Christ.
Living with Christ and in the
communion of saints, we grow in
faith, love and obedience to the
will of God. (to Parents): Called by
the Holy Spirit, trusting in the
grace and love of God, do you
desire to have your child baptized
into Christ?
PARENTS: I do.
P: As you bring your child to
receive the gift of baptism, you are
entrusted with responsibilities: to
live with her among God's faithful
people, bring her to the word of
God and the holy supper, teach her
the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and
the Ten Commandments, place in
her hands the holy scriptures,
and nurture her in faith and prayer,
so that your child may learn to trust
God, proclaim Christ through word
and deed, care for others and the
world God made, and work for
justice and peace. Do you promise
to help your child grow in the
Christian faith and life?
PARENTS: I do.
P: (to Sponsors): Sponsors, do you
promise to nurture this child in the
Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help her
live in the covenant of baptism and
in communion with the church?
SPONSORS: I do.
P: (to All): People of God, do you
promise to support ELLA and pray
for her in her new life in Christ?
ALL: We do.
P: (to Parents, Sponsors): I ask you
to profess your faith in Christ Jesus,
reject sin, and confess the faith of
the church. Do you renounce the
devil and all the forces that defy
God?
SPONSORS/PARENTS:

I renounce them.
P: (to Parents, Sponsors): Do you
renounce the powers of this world
that rebel against God?
SPONSORS/PARENTS:

I renounce them.
P: (to Parents, Sponsors): Do
you renounce the ways of sin that
draw you from God?
SPONSORS/PARENTS:

I renounce them.
P: (to All) Do you believe in God
the Father?
ALL: I believe in God, the Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth.
P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ,
the Son of God?
ALL: I believe in Jesus Christ,
God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead. On the
third day he rose again; he
ascended into heaven; he is
seated at the right hand of the
Father, and he will come again to
judge the living and the dead.
P: Do you believe in God the Holy
Spirit?
ALL: I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the
life everlasting.
P: What is the full name of the child
to be baptized?
SPONSORS/PARENTS:
"Ella Amara Kartawidjaja"
P: ELLA, I baptize you in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit. Amen
P: Congregation, please join me in
affirming this new child of God.
All: You belong to Christ, in whom
you have been baptized. Alleluia.
Let us pray .....
We give you thanks, a God, that
through water and the Holy Spirit
you give your daughters and sons
new birth, cleanse them from sin,
and raise them to eternal life.
Sustain ELLA with the gift of your
Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom
and understanding, the spirit of
counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the
fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in
your presence, both now and
forever.
ALL: Amen
P: Ella Amara Kartawidjaja, child
of God, you have been sealed by
the Holy Spirit and marked with
the cross of Christ forever.
ALL: Amen
P: Let your light so shine before
others that they may see your
good works and glorify your
Father in heaven.
Let us welcome the newly
baptized.
All: We welcome you into the
body of Christ and into the
mission we share: join us in
giving thanks and praise to God
and bearing God's creative and
redeeming word to all the world.

Wake, Awake for
Night is Flying
#436 ELW
Wake, awake, for night is flying,
the watchmen on the heights are
crying: awake, Jerusalem, at last.
Midnight hears the welcome voices,
and at the thrilling cry rejoices;
Come forth, you maidens! Night is past
The bridegroom comes! Awake:
Your lamps with gladness take!
Alleluia!
Raise and prepare the feast to share;
go, meet the bridegroom,
who draws near
Zion hears the watchmen singing,
and all her heart with joy is springing;
She wakes, she rises from her gloom,
Her dear friend comes down, all
glorious, the strong in grace, in truth
victorious:
Her star is ris’n, her light is come.
Now come, O Blessed One,
Lord Jesus, God’s own Son.
Sing Hosanna!
Oh, hear the call! Come one, come all,
and follow to the banquet hall.
Gloria! Let heav’n adore you!
Let saints and angels sing before you,
With harp and cymbal’s clearest tone.
Gates of pearl, twelve portals gleaming,
lead us to bliss beyond all dreaming,
with angel choirs around your throne.
No eye has caught the light,
no ear the thund’ring might of such glory.
There we will go: what joy we’ll know!
There sweet delight will ever flow

My Hope is Built
on Nothing Less

#597 ELW
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood
and righteousness;
no merit of my own I claim,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in ev'ry high and stormy gale
my anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, his covenant, his blood
sustain me in the raging flood;
when all supports are washed away,
he then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
When he shall come
with trumpet sound,
oh, may I then in him be found,
clothed in his righteousness alone,
redeemed to stand before the throne!
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.

Advent 1 13 combined final

  • 1. First Sunday of Advent Prayers of Hope for a Renewed and Better World December 1, 2013 9:00 a.m.
  • 3. Advent Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All: Amen P: The Lord of Advent tells us to be watchful for his coming, keeping our lamps lighted, and our hearts clean. All: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P: Let us confess to the Lord. (time for silent reflection)
  • 4. P: Gracious God… All: We prepare our hearts for the coming of Your Son, confessing our sins of omission and commission, confessing our lure into a world that knows not the Christ of our preparations. Forgive our sins, cleanse our hearts, and keep us faithful and focused on the promised coming of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
  • 5. P: God sent Jesus, to show infinite love and forgiveness for all. Our sins are forgiven in the holy name of Christ who came and will come again. All: Amen.
  • 6. Oh Little Town of Bethlehem ELW #279
  • 7. O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by.
  • 8. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
  • 9. For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above, While mortals sleep the angels keep Their watch of wond'ring love.
  • 10. O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth; And praises sing to God the king, And peace to all the earth.
  • 11. How silent, how silently The wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav'n.
  • 12. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, The dear Christ enters in.
  • 13. O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today.
  • 14. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord, Emmanuel.
  • 15. LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE P: The first candle of Advent is the light of Hope. All: Our hope is in God, and in God’s son Jesus Christ. He is the one appointed by God to be judge of all things. He is the one through whom God has promised to save and redeem all people.
  • 16. P: We light this candle today to remind us that God is our hope. All: To remember that God is the only hope of the world. We thank God for the promises He has made to us and for the light Christ has brought into the world.
  • 17. A CANDLE IS BURNING ( sung to tune of “Away in the Manger”) A Candle is burning, a flame warm and bright, a candle of hope in the winter’s dark night. While angels sing blessing from heaven's starry sky, our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh.
  • 18. P: Let us pray… All: O God of Hope, we pray you to send your light into our hearts. Help us to be ready for the day and the hour of Christ's appearing. Work in our hearts at this time and help us prepare ourselves for the hope that he brings – the hope that assures us that we are united with you in all the joys and trials of life…
  • 19. ..life now and everlasting. Bless our worship that it may be pleasing to you, and bless us that we may prove to be your faithful servants. Amen.
  • 21. PRAYER OF THE DAY All: Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection save us from the threatening dangers of our sins, and enlighten our walk in the way of your salvation,
  • 22. for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
  • 23. ADVENT SONG A voice in the wild and the gift from a child; a promise of far off ages. The world greets the word and a way to the Lord; a light in our darkest places.
  • 26. Each Winter As The Year Grows Older ELW #252
  • 27. Each winter as the year grows older, we each grow older too. The chill sets in a little colder; the verities we knew seem shaken and untrue.
  • 28. When race and class cry out for treason, when sirens call for war, they over shout the voice of reason and scream till we ignore all we held dear before.
  • 29. Yet I believe beyond believing, that life can spring from death; that growth can flower from our grieving; that we can catch our breath and turn transfixed by faith.
  • 30. So even as the sun is turning to journey to the north, the living flame, in secret burning, can kindle on the earth and bring God’s love to birth.
  • 31. O Child of ecstasy and sorrows, O Prince of peace and pain, brighten today’s world by tomorrow’s, renew our lives again; Lord Jesus, come and reign.

  • 46. P: Congregation, please join me in affirming this new child of God. All: You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia. Let us pray .....
  • 47. We give you thanks, a God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain ELLA with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might,
