there is a fairly obvious path:
1. be familiar with the Apache Way, especially about
meritocracy
2. participate in the mailing lists and help (often
more important than writing amazing code)
3. write code, add patches, unit tests and
documentation
In the earlier stages of the project, the bar is a bit
lower, so it pays to join early!
