4. Growth Cities: Urbanisation of Africa
• According to UN-Habitat: 1/3 of Africa's 1
billion inhabitants currently live in urban
areas, but by 2030 that proportion will
have risen to a half.
• Most populous city in 2010 is Cairo, will
grow by 23% to 13.5m people, but
overtaken by both Lagos (15.8m) and
Kinshasa (15m).
• Number of middle class Africans has
tripled over the last 30 years to 313 million
people, or more than 34% of the
continent’s population.
• North Africa has the highest middle class.
Tunisia has highest concentration 90%,
followed by Morocco 85% & Egypt 80%. Other
countries include Gabon, Botswana, Namibia,
Ghana, Cape Verde, Kenya and South Africa.
