Science – comes from a latin word Scientia ( scient-
sciens) which means having knowledge.
Science as a Product and a Process
As a product is an ever-changing body of knowledge.
An ongoing process of investigating and thinking.
Superstitions are beliefs which are not usually
explained by the methods of the natural sciences.
Branches of Sciences
a. Social science – study of people , culture and
societies. It includes economics, geography , history,
law, education, sociology and psychology.
b. Natural science – seeks to understand the natural
world and its different processes. It includes biology,
chemistry, mathematics and physics.
Natural Science
1. Pure Science
2. Applied Science
1. Pure Science – used in pursuit of new knowledge. It deals with
new discoveries that may or may not have current practical
applications.
a. Physical sciences – are those that involve the study of
nonliving things
a.1 Physics – matter and energy and the interactions
between them.
a.2 Chemistry – matter, its composition, structure and
properties, the changes it undergoes and the
energy accompanying these changes.
a.3 Earth science – earth and its composition
2. Biological science/Biology – study of living things
Zoology Biochemistry
Botany Biophysics
Physiology Paleontology
Anatomy Astrobiology
Histology Human kinetics
Cytology Ecology
Genetics Agriculture Chemistry
Taxonomy
Agriculture
2. Applied Science – use the discoveries of the pure
sciences, create practical solutions and make products
useful in actual settings. Example engineering, medicine,
electronics, environmental science and computer
science.
Technology – the application of scientific knowledge
for practical purposes
Values of a good scientist
1. Curiosity – shows interest and pays particular
attentions; ask questions and seek answers.
2. Perseverance – never give up
3. Honesty – must reflect the truth
4. Responsibility – accountable for the consequences/
results
5. Discipline – follows rules and scientific method
6. Open-mindedness – listens to and respect the ideas of
others.
7. Creativity – can generate new and original ideas
Assignment #1: Find the meaning of the following
Biochemistry Agriculture
Biophysics Taxonomy
Physiology Paleontology
Anatomy Astrobiology
Histology Human kinetics
