The reason why it is safe to be in a large substantial enclosed building is that if lightning hits the building, the electrical current will travel through the wiring or plumbing, and then safely into the ground. A large, enclosed substantial building is the safest place to be in during thunder and lightning activity. Examples of large substantial buildings include schools, businesses, homes and apartments. If you are in a building, stay away from plumbing or anything that is connected to the electric, cable or telephone system, such as a computer, TV, corded telephone, etc. Many large buildings have lightning protection systems that safely guide the electrical current deep into the earths surface.

The safest thing to do if you are outside and lightning and/or thunder begins to occur is to run to a safe shelter such as a large substantial enclosed building or a metal topped vehicle. You do not want to remain outside when lightning is occurring . Remember, it is important to run to a safe shelter immediately once lightning becomes a threat; if you hear the first rumble of thunder, run to shelter. If you see a lightning flash, run to shelter. If you see dark threatening clouds developing overhead, run to shelter. Do not wait until the storm is upon you before seeking shelter. The only time you would want to consider squatting down is if you were outside in an open area and there was no safe location nearby for you to run to. This situation typically occurs to hikers-campers who are out in the wilderness. Remember; people are struck by lightning because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The wrong place is anywhere outside. The wrong time is anytime a thunderstorm is overhead or nearby.

The reason why being on a corded telephone is dangerous is due to the fact that the telephone is connected to the telephone wires outside. If lightning were to strike these telephone wires, the electrical current could travel through the phone lines and into the telephone handset. Numerous people have been injured and killed by lighting while talking on a corded telephone. It should be noted that phones that are not connected to a cord, such as cell phones and telephones that do not have a cord are safe to use when lightning activity is occurring outside.

The reason why it is dangerous to be in contact with water in the home when thunder and lightning is occurring outside is if lightning were to strike in or near the home, the dangerous electrical current from the flash could get into the plumbing, electrocuting the person in contact with the water. Remember, water is an excellent conductor of electricity. You do not want to be taking a bath or shower, or washing dishes, when thunder and lightning is occurring outside. Some people have access to covered swimming pools on their property. These are also dangerous to be in or near when thunder and lightning is occurring. All types of swimming pools, inside or outside, are dangerous when lightning is occurring. It is a good idea to simply stay away from any and all types of plumbing when storms are nearby.

The reason why working on a computer is dangerous is due to the fact that the computer is connected to a variety of wires and cables which are connected to the wiring of the building. Lightning could either directly strike the building or the outside utility wiring and then travel into the building. The dangerous current could then travel through the wiring in the building, and electrocute the person typing on the keyboard. Computers in the workplace are connected to a variety of wiring sources, including power, telephone, LAN systems and cable. Many computer systems at home are connected to the electrical outlet and either the cable line and telephone line. Computers which are not connected to any wiring are safe to use when thunder and lightning is occurring outside. It is always a good idea to disconnect your home computer from all outside wiring (power, cable, telephone). Nearly all “power surge devices” are not designed to handle the intense currents/voltages of a lightning strike.

A person on a roof is in a very dangerous location if lightning were in the vicinity. There are 2 main reasons why being on a roof is dangerous; 1) The person is outside and is on top of a tall object (the roof), and 2) The person would be completely exposed and relatively isolated. Lightning typically strikes tall isolated exposed objects. Lightning caused house fires are relatively common. The primary area where lightning strikes the house is the roof. You do not want to be on top of a roof when lightning is occurring.

The reason why a soft topped convertible is not safe is that the fabric of the roof offers absolutely no protection from the electrical current of a lightning strike to the vehicle. The electrical current could easily get into the compartment of the vehicle electrocuting the occupants. If you are driving along in a convertible and a lightning storm develops overhead or nearby, you should stop the vehicle and seek shelter in a large substantial building. There are some hard-topped (metal) convertibles on the market. These are relatively safer to be in as long as the top is up.

History has repeatedly that people leave shopping centers too early when a lightning storm is occurring. Why this happens is people wait until the rain lets up, and then run towards their vehicles. However, the problem is that the lightning can still strike after the rain lets up. Just because the rain lets up does not mean the lightning threat is decreasing. You should stay in the shopping center until the thunder and lightning ends completely. Every year people in shopping center parking lots are struck by lightning while running towards their cars. How are people struck by lightning in shopping center parking lots? Typically, lightning strikes an object in the parking lot, such as the tall light poles. The dangerous current from the lightning flash then travels down the object and across the wet ground surface, electrocuting the people walking on the wet parking lot. Lightning can also directly strike the person walking in the parking lot. Your rubber shoes offer NO protection whatsoever from the very high voltages of a lightning flash.

Outdoor sporting activities are dangerous during thunder and lightning because you are outside and exposed to the lightning threat. Those involved in outdoor sporting activities have an increased risk of being struck due to the fact that they are typically standing or running in a large open field. In addition, large light poles are usually nearby, and these poles are susceptible to being hit because they are tall isolated objects. If you (or your family) are involved in an outdoor sporting activity, and lightning and thunder begins to occur, IMMEDIATELY RUN OFF THE FIELD AND GET INTO A SAFE SHELTER (such as your vehicle [a hard topped vehicle] or a large substantial building). At the end of this quiz, you will be have the opportunity to visit the NCAA lightning safety website.

The reason why tents are dangerous is they offer no protection from the electrical current of a lightning flash. A direct lightning flash will go straight into the tent. A nearby lightning flash may be equally as dangerous as the current could travel across the ground and into the tent. It does not matter how big the tent is; a one person camping tent is just as dangerous as a circus tent. It also does not matter if the tent is “open” or “closed”, Numerous people have been injured or killed in all types of tents. Rubber mats inside the tent offer no protection from a lightning flash. In addition, it does not matter if the poles holding up the tent are metal or fiberglass or wood…they are all equally dangerous. A tent is designed to keep you dry, and to keep the bugs away from you. It offers no protection whatsoever from a direct or nearby lightning flash. Remember, if you are camping, and your vehicle is nearby, go run to your vehicle and wait out the storm inside your vehicle. Better yet, if there is a substantially large building nearby, run to this building and wait out the storm inside.
The reason why a picnic shelter (or any other type of shelter that is open to the outside) is dangerous is the electrical current from a direct lightning flash can easily get inside of the shelter. Lightning can also hit nearby, and the current could travel across the surface electrocuting any occupants standing under the shelter. Other type of “open” shelters which are dangerous include any type of picnic shelters or pavilions, baseball dugouts, car ports, porch overhangs or beach shacks. The reason why it is very dangerous to be in a golf cart, or any other type of vehicle that is “open” to the outside, is that the lighting can easily strike the people riding in the vehicle. Even if the flash does not make direct contact with the occupants in the vehicle, the dangerous electrical currents will likely cause serious injury or death. The rubber tires on any type of vehicle do NOT make the vehicle “safe” during lightning activity. An average lightning flash typically travels 7 miles through the atmosphere. An inch or so of rubber will not make any difference whatsoever. Any type of “open” vehicle is dangerous during lightning activity.

The reason why a boat or a jet ski is dangerous when thunder and lightning is occurring is that the boat/jet ski is the tallest object out on the flat water, and is susceptible to being struck by a lightning flash. In addition, boats, especially boats that do not have large enclosed cabins, offer no protection from a lightning flash. Boats which have large enclosed cabins are safe to be in during lightning activity.

The reason why riding a motorcycle or any type of ATV is dangerous when lighting is occurring is that you are completely exposed to the lightning threat. While you are riding, you are relatively the tallest object around and a target for lightning. You cannot “outrun” a lightning flash on an ATV or a motorcycle. The tires on a motorcycle or ATV offer absolutely NO protection whatsoever from lightning. Numerous people have been struck by lightning while riding motorcycles and ATVs. In 2005, 3 cyclists in Colorado were struck by lightning on 3 separate occasions. At the end of this quiz, you can read an article about a man who was riding a motorcycle in Colorado at highway speeds and was killed by a lightning flash.

CORRECT Being in a all metal camper like this is relatively safe. However, if you have the opportunity to get into a large enclosed substantial shelter, or a metal topped vehicle, you should do this instead. The reason why some metal campers may not be the safest place to be is that the metal skin of these vehicles may be too thin, and some of the electrical current from the lightning flash could melt the metal skin, and get inside the vehicle. The reason why a camper or motorhome is relatively safe from lightning is it is surrounded by metal, which will transfer the dangerous electric current safely around you (similar to a hard topped vehicle). However, some campers or motorhomes have metal exteriors which are too thin and may allow the dangerous electric current from a lightning strike to penetrate through the metal. Nearly all of the casualties associated with people in the vicinity of campers or motorhomes occurred while they were standing in the open doorway, or under an attached awning, and lightning hit the structure. If you have no choice but a camper or motorhome for shelter, get completely inside and close the door, and stay away from the metal surface. If you have a choice between a camper/motorhome or a large substantial building or a hard topped vehicle, seek shelter in the building or the vehicle.

The reason why bleachers are dangerous is they are typically the tallest objects in the area, and lightning has a tendency to strike tall objects. Bleachers which are made of wood, metal or cement are all dangerous. Metal bleachers are believed to be more dangerous as the metal will conduct the electricity across the entire surface of the bleachers. Enclosed box seating, (such as those you see at major outdoor sports arenas) are much safer from lightning, as they are enclosed.

Woops, you need to click on the little orange arrow in the lower right hand side of the slide to advance to the next question. Click anywhere on the screen to return to the previous slide.
The reason why this type of building is not safe is due to its size. Although this building may have plumbing and electrical wiring inside of it, a direct lightning flash to this type of building may cause the electric current to arc between the walls inside the building. A small enclosed building which does NOT have any plumbing or wiring is very dangerous to be in. This is why it is recommended that you seek shelter in a large substantial building (such as your home, a business, a school, etc) when lightning is occurring. The second best place to be is inside a metal topped vehicle.

The reason why the pole barn (or any other type of shelter that is open to the outside) is dangerous is the electrical current from the lightning flash can easily get inside of the building. Lightning can hit the building and then travel across the ground surface electrocuting any occupants standing in the shelter. Other type of “open” shelters which are dangerous include picnic shelters, baseball dugouts, beach shacks, any type of tent (it does not matter the size) or car ports.

Woops, you need to click on the little orange arrow in the lower right hand side of the slide to advance to the next question. Click anywhere on the screen to return to the previous slide.
The reason why it is not safe to be near tall isolated objects, such as utility poles, is lightning has a natural tendency to strike tall isolated objects. Utility poles have an additional inherent danger when it comes to lightning. A lightning flash could strike the utility pole, and the current from the flash could travel through the wires and into a home or business. Since the wires are excellent conductors of electricity, this dangerous current could travel a great distance. Although being in a home or business is very safe when thunder and lightning is occurring outside, it is important for you to not be in contact with anything that could be connected to the outside utility wiring (such as a computer, a corded telephone, etc). You also want to stay away from the plumbing.
Lightning Safety Game CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve completed the “Lightning Safety Game” Remember, NO place outdoors is safe when thunderstorms are in the area. At the first sign of lightning and thunder, run to a safe location. Don’t wait until the storm is on top of you! A safe location is a home, school, store, or other large fully enclosed substantially constructed building. A hard topped vehicle, such as a car, SUV, truck, or bus is also a very good place to seek shelter if no large, fully enclosed building is nearby. Do not touch any metal in the vehicle (don’t touch the radio) while lightning is occurring. It is important to remember that you should get to a hard topped vehicle at the first sign of a lightning storm. Don’t wait until the lightning is occurring immediately around you before running to the vehicle. At the end of this lightning safety quiz, you will have the opportunity to visit a web site which discusses more about automobiles and lightning safety . .
