The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) is the country's leading metropolitan indoor horse show, and annually produces six days of world-class competition in the nation’s capital. Spectators enjoy some of the world’s best international show jumping, elite hunter competition, and the top junior riders in the country. VIP hospitality, boutique shopping and a silent auction add to the special experience.
Established in 1958, the WIHS attracts more than 26,000 spectators to the championship event. WIHS, a World Cup qualifier, is rated CSI4*-W by the FEI. Highlights include the Puissance (high jump) on Military Night, the $125,000 President's Cup Grand Prix, and Kids' Day, a free, fun and educational community event. The Washington International Horse Show Association, Ltd. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.

WELCOME
from the WIHS
President & Chairperson
Thank you for joining us to celebrate the 55th annual Washington International Horse Show. It is the first year we have
worked together as President and Chairman of the Board, and on behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire WIHS
team, we would like to welcome you and share how excited we are about the 2013 event.
The enthusiastic response this year from top competitors in the U.S. and around the world will bring the best of the best
to Washington, D.C. From 2013 World Cup Champion Beezie Madden to our youngest small pony hunter rider, to
international pros representing six countries, more than 500 horses and their riders have earned a coveted spot at the
Washington International. We would like to congratulate them all! The stakes are now higher than ever with nearly
$100,000 more in prize money and bonuses including a new $50,000 Speed Final, Young Jumper Championship
Incentive Bonuses and the $125,000 President’s Cup Grand Prix.
With the best in equestrian sport showcased in the ring, the competition will be fierce, but we are proud that new
exhibition and shopping experiences will also vie for your attention! The 2013 vendor concourse is filled to capacity with
nearly 60 boutiques offering fashion, tack, fine jewelry, gifts and more. Our special evening entertainment this year
includes the first ever WIHS Shetland Pony International Steeplechase on Thursday night. And on Saturday evening, we
will feature Celebrity Barrel Racing, pairing up top equestrians and champion barrel racers in the ultimate relay ride-off!
We also look forward to celebrating our heroes and local community in new ways. Friday evening’s Military Night will
welcome our newest partner, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, to honor Sergeant Reckless, a true war horse
who served with U.S. troops in the Korean War. We will also present the inaugural Klinger Perpetual Award for Honor
and Service to recognize the service animals, organizations and people who make a difference every day.
WIHS will be the first to support a new joint program from the EQUUS Foundation and the USEF, which gives back
to horse welfare organizations. In the Acela Club, we will host two events to benefit local charities – Thursday night’s
Buck Breast Cancer event in support of the Capital Breast Care Center, and Friday Night’s Armed Forces Reception will
raise money for therapeutic riding centers in the area that offer equine-assisted therapies to military veterans.
When we look to the future, we are excited to call Verizon Center the home of the Washington International Horse
Show through 2016. We would like to thank all of our neighbors in Penn Quarter for their support as well as our
generous and dedicated board members, sponsors, partners and staff who ensure the continued success of this very
special event.
Thank you all, have fun and good luck to all the exhibitors!
Sincerely, Sincerely,
Victoria Lowell, President Juliet W. Reid, Chairman
10. HERMÈS CAVALE, JUMPING WITH FREEDOM
Both technical and athletic, the new Hermès Cavale saddle was designed for top level show jumping with the help of our
partner rider, Simon Delestre. With its wide gullet, angled foam-injected panels, and its seamless medium-deep seat,
Hermès Cavale combines balance, comfort for horse and rider, and close contact riding. It offers an innovative answer
to the search for the perfect feel over fences.

the Washington International. This
beautiful book, filled with photos of
Blackburn-designed barns
throughout the country, turns
traditional sheltering for horses on
its ear, and introduces concepts of
aerodynamic ventilation, strategic
natural light and passive solar
heating and cooling to create the
optimal living environment for horses. Pick up
this informative book on the concourse. Be sure stop by the autograph booth
to get it signed and chat with John about horses and stables. A portion of the
sales will benefit local therapeutic riding centers assisting military veterans.
WIHS Welcomes
Cultural Partners
WIHS is pleased to welcome the
National Museum of the Marine
Corps, Sgt. Reckless Memorial Fund,
and the Marine Corps Heritage
Foundation as cultural partners this
year. The three organizations and have
worked together to spread the word
about a special Marine—a horse
named Reckless.
Staff Sergeant Reckless joined the
Marines to carry ammunition to the
front lines for the 75mm Recoilless
Rifle Platoon of the 5th Marines
during the Korean War, and she
quickly earned the love and respect of
all of the Marines that served with her.
She was promoted to the rank of Staff
Sergeant by the Commandant of the
USMC, a rank never before or since
bestowed upon an animal.
The Sergeant Reckless Memorial
Fund raised money for the creation of
a monument in tribute of SSgt.
Reckless. The memorial, sculpted by
Washington state artist Jocelyn Russell,
was unveiled in July and now lives at
the National Museum of Marine
Corps and Heritage Center in
Triangle, Virginia. Inside the museum’s
Korean War exhibit, there is a special
fixture dedicated to Reckless.
The extraordinary story of SSgt.
Reckless will be highlighted on
Military Night. Learn more in the
museum’s booth on the concourse.

A special award to be given each year given by the Washington
International Horse Show to a horse, person or organization who has
served with honor and excellence.
In its inaugural year, the Washington International will present the eponymous
award to Klinger, a special horse who has touched the lives of many in his life of
service with the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon at
Fort Myer in Virginia. Among his duties, Klinger has served as the official Escort to
the President of the United States and led the Presidential Inauguration Parade. He
has worked with wounded veterans and been a comfort to the children of TAPS,
bringing hope and healing to the families of our nation's fallen heroes. Klinger has
been inducted into the Horse Stars Hall of Fame by EQUUS Foundation and the
United States Equestrian Federation for his service. Klinger has been an important
part of the Washington International for the past three years –visiting with children
on Kids’ Day, joining in the Breakfast with the Mounted Police, and participating
in the moving Caisson Platoon exhibition.

HAPPENINGS
Poster Girl
The Washington International Horse Show
poster art this year is photography taken by
award-winning photographer Shelli Breidenbach,
who is celebrated worldwide for her
photographs. Her statuesque and commanding
equestrian images reflect the aesthetic beauty,
grace and strength that each horse possesses.
The photo shoot for the poster art took place
in May at Staysail Farm in North Salem, N.Y.
The equestrian models, Antares F and Super
Trooper De Ness, both owned by Grant Road
Partners LLC, are ridden by Olympic gold
medalist McLain Ward.
Breidenbach complimented the manners of
“Andi” and “Trooper,” particularly since Super Trooper De Ness is a stallion. “They
are both such amazing horses,” she said, “and so patient!”
Breidenbach had a vision as she approached the photo shoot for the official
WIHS poster. “I had this idea of a statuesque horse standing between the columns
of the Lincoln Monument,” said Breidenbach. To create the effect, the horses stood
in front of a green screen so that their portraits could be digitally placed on a
variety of backgrounds.
Her vision became a reality! The pictures produced beautiful photos of these
two horses, and this year, the Washington International is selling two versions of
the official poster—one with Antares F standing in the monument, and the other
with both horses facing one another, accompanied by the tagline, “The most
powerful players in DC don’t belong to either party.”
Breidenbach has photographed horses all around the world. Her radiant life-size
portrait collection blends full-body images with close-up, abstract body parts. She
theatrically poses her subjects against black, white and brilliantly colored canvas
backgrounds. While shooting, she is able to develop a relationship with the horse, a
skill that few photographers are able to achieve. It is this intimacy that allows her
to reach an entirely different level of beauty and
artistry.
When printed on canvas, and stretched over
wooden stretcher bars, her images can
resemble a modern oil painting. When printed
on fiber paper or utilizing the platinum
printing process, they have a more traditional
feel of fine art works on paper.
Despite her rigorous shooting schedule,
Breidenbach is passionate about helping
charities through her art. She has
contributed her photography and time to
the Panther Ridge Sanctuary, the Equestrian
Aid Foundation, the ASPCA, and the
Robin Hood Foundation.
A sampling of her work can be viewed at
www.shellibreidenbach.com. Breidenbach
lives in New York with her family, horses
and dogs.

35. Washington International Horse Show 2013 33
Hello WIHS!
Recently while sorting thru pix on my camera I came across this one of Elaine
Kramer posing by a copy of your poster for the 1963 Washington International
Horse Show, which featured her 6-Horse Roman Riding Exhibition.
Her act featured her standing atop a team of Saddlebred horses while driving two
more tandem teams ahead of her. She took her teams in circles, figure 8's and jumps,
ultimately taking them all over a double jump with the first and third teams up at the
same time. Elaine performed twice a day at the show, which she remembers was at
the National Guard Armory. We also have the official program where she marked
the schedule after each appearance - grading herself and her performance!
Elaine went on that year to perform two weeks at Madison Square Garden, and she
continued to perform at all the major horse shows and rodeos for another 10 years before
retiring her team. In 2005 she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.
I thought it would be fun to pass along this remembrance and some photos, and
to let you know that 50 years later, the 1963 show still holds wonderful memories
for one of those involved in it! I was in Washington a couple years ago and was
thrilled to see that your show is right there at Verizon Center, and I enjoyed seeing
the stables that extended out into the streets. I stopped in just to pick up a program
to show Elaine how the show keeps going on.
Wishing you much success on your 2013 Washington International Horse Show!

watch the exhibitors jump their
horses! At Washington, I’d get up in

feel like I was going over every
jump right along with every horse
and rider.”

The National Museum of the Marine Corps celebrates over 238 years of United States
Marine Corps history. Come follow in the footsteps of Marines: from boot camp
to the boot prints left in the sands of the Pacific Islands, in the snow of the Chosin
Reservoir, on Vietnam’s Hill 881, and the continued global fight against terror.

WELCOME STAFF SERGEANT RECKLESS! We are pleased to have a statue of Staff Sergeant Reckless,
a legendary Marine war horse. SSgt Reckless, purchased by a Marine from a local boy during the Korean
War, was used to carry ammunition to the frontlines and quickly became a beloved presence on and off the
battlefield. One of SSgt Reckless’ finest moments was during the Battle of Outpost Vegas, a violent five-day
battle during which the brave horse made 51 trips up and down a steep mountain side to reach the Marines’
firing positions. To this day, Korean War veterans recall seeing SSgt Reckless repeatedly make the harrowing
trek to bring both life-saving supplies and boosts to morale. Come to the National Museum
to visit this legendary war horse!

high-jump on WIHS Military Night 2012.
Boeing has a long-standing commitment to support men and women in uniform
and military families. This is evidenced by the products and services we provide
our nation’s forces to advocacy and support of the USO, the National Math and
Science Initiative, the Military Spouse Corporate Career Network and Joining
Forces, a national initiative to support and honor service members and their
families.
In 2012, Boeing contributed more than $19.5 million to support military and
veterans’ organizations and launched www.boeing.com/tribute to further
recognize the contributions of military personnel.
Boeing has hired and trained more than 3,000 self-identified veterans in the past
two years for jobs at Boeing. About 24,300 veterans are currently employed at
Boeing and many continue to serve in the National Guard and Reserves. Boeing
has been recognized as a Top 100 Military-Friendly Employer by G.I. Jobs
Magazine and as a “Best for Vets Employer” by Military Times Magazine.
Additional information about Boeing’s broad support of military, veterans and
their families is available in the online 2012 Global Corporate Citizen Report.
The Washington International Horse Show is
proud to welcome The Boeing Company as
the presenting sponsor of Military Night.

MILITARY NIGHTpresented by The Boeing Company
Caisson
Platoon
The U.S. Army’s Caisson Platoon once
again will take center stage at the
Washington International on Friday
night for a moving, patriotic
demonstration to help us honor the
sacrifices made by all members of the
military. Part of The Old Guard at
Fort Myer, the Caisson Platoon serves
at Arlington National Cemetery. The
same dutiful horses that pull the
caisson for the burial of a fallen service
member also help rehabilitate
wounded warriors by improving their
physical well-being and morale.
Military Ticket
Program
Thanks to corporate sponsors The
Boeing Company, Travelers and
Fidelity Investments ™, as well as
personal donations, the WIHS
Military Ticket Program provides
complimentary tickets to local service
members and their families. All
contributions fund tickets distributed
through the Armed Forces Foundation
to local installations including
Andrews Air Force Base, Fort Myer-
Henderson Hall, Bethesda National
Naval Media Center, Army Recreation
and a U.S. Air Force Services at the
Pentagon, and many others. Since the
program began three years ago, WIHS
has distributed more than 7,500 show
tickets to military families.
TAPS
WIHS is proud to welcome back
Tragedy Assistance Program for
Survivors as our charity partner this
year. TAPS is the 24/7 tragedy
assistance resource for anyone suffering
the loss of a military loved one in
military service to America, regardless
of their relationship to the deceased,
geography or circumstance of death.
Providing ongoing emotional help,
hope and healing through
comprehensive services and programs,
TAPS has assisted more than 30,000
surviving family members, casualty
officers and caregivers.
