7. Expert Opinion ____
7.1 Ms Heather Robertson, Director, Data Link Solutions
Data Link Solutions is a joint venture between BAE Systems and Rockwell Collins and was
established in 1996. Data Link Solutions is a leading supplier of Link 16 terminals, software and
services for air, land, and sea-based platforms. DLS has provided MIDS terminals for more than 40
different platforms in 28 different countries.
Visiongain would like to thank Ms Heather Robertson and Mr Dave Gosch for their assistance and
contribution to this report.
7.1.1 Data Link Solutions, A Unique Link 16 Terminal Supplier
Visiongain (VG): Could you comment upon the nature of the role that Data Link Solutions plays in
the military communications market?
Heather Robertson (HR): Data Link Solutions is a joint venture between BAE Systems and
Rockwell Collins and was formed in 1996. Since that time period, DLS has become the only
supplier of every model of Link 16 terminals available to the marketplace today and has achieved
over $2.5B in global sales. Link 16 is one of the two mandated official waveforms the USG has
deemed necessary to combat enemy forces and provides mission critical situational awareness to
all assets - air, ground, surface - within a common theatre of operations.
7.1.2 Data Link Solutions’ Link 16 Inventory
VG: Could you go into some detail about the key tactical communications products Data Link
Solutions produces, particularly the MIDS JTRS systems?
HR: Currently, the DLS Link 16 inventory consists of:
• Maintaining the older JTIDS version of Link 16, namely on Navy vessels
• FDL (Fighter Data Link) on targeted USAF fighter platforms
• MIDS LVT (Low Volume Terminal) and its many variants
• MIDS JTRS, the next generation, multi-channel SDR MIDS terminal
• Small Form Factor Data Link through our TTR (TacNet Tactical Radio) product
