Permanent queries
• A Visibium query is a permanent search,
i.e. it is run and run again at frequent
intervals on newly pulled‐in posts.
• Visibium supports two different types of
search:
– Keyword‐based analytical search
– Score‐based search, where search terms are
weighted and a match is positive when scores
reaches a threshold.
• Use of professional‐grade full‐text search
tools:
– Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
– Wildcards (single‐character or multiple‐
character substitution, truncating)
– Fuzzy searches
– Proximity searches (word proximity).
• A color is assigned to a query
for enhanced usability. When
a post is a match to a query:
– The post is marked with a flag of
the query color
– Matching terms are highlighted
with the same color directly in
the text of the post.
• Alerts are defined at a query
level. A post matching the
query will trigger the
associated alert (SMS, e‐mail,
Jabber).

Low latency by design
• Every few minutes (*) Visibium pulls new content from every user‐defined
source, applies the filters, performs a full text incremental indexing and
runs all the permanent queries on the new posts.
• Subsequent alerts are immediately triggered; a refresh is available on
monitoring stations; output feeds are updated and online statistics are
refreshed.
(*): every 3rd minute for Twitter feeds, every 15th minute for other feeds. The intervals can be further reduced
on custom accounts.

Visibium Glossary of Terms (1/2)
Blog a website providing regular entries (posts), generally displayed in reverse‐chronological order. Blog posts may be open to comments from visitors or not.
Blogroll an assembly of blog URLs (blogs that the blogger reads regularly) displayed at the sidebar of the blog
Comment a response or a reaction to a blog post or a message on a social network. Comments are a primary form of 2‐way communication on the social web.
Drupal Drupal is an open‐source platform and content management system. Visibium user interface is based on Drupal 7.
Feed a mean to read, view or listen to messages from blogs and other RSS‐enabled sites without actually visiting the site.
Filter a set of items (e.g. keyword, combination of keywords, character string) used to screen and exclude part or all of a document. In the context of Visibium
a filter is a keyword (or combinaison of keywords) used on a feed at the time of its pulling in order to screen out the posts that do not match the
keyword. Filters do not modify posts, they let them in or keep them out. A Twitter track is a filter applied by Twitter before delivering a Twitter feed to
Visibium.
Firehose a syndication feed or an API that publishes or provides access to all activities on the fly in one single data stream.
Flag attribute given to a post that matches a query. Visibium associates the same color to a query and to the flag of matching posts.
Follower a Social Network user who subscribes to another user's updates. When looged into his account, a follower will see a list of posts from the users he is
following.
Forum a forum (or Message Board) is an online discussion site. A froum is most often organized by conversations.
Friend on Facebook, a user can communicate with other users he has approved as "friends". Each user can share information, photos, videos and other content
with his "friends".
Handle a Twitter username identified with the @ symbol. A handle can be used in the text of a tweet to create a reference to that Twitter account.If the handle
is the first word of the tweet then the tweet is visibile only to followers of both the tweeting account and the reference account.
Hashtag a tag used on Twitter as a way to annotate a message. A hashtag is a word or a phrase preceded by a “#” and is used to show that a Tweet is related to a
certain topic.
Hit see "Match"
Influencer a person specialized in a specific subject matter and highly recognized in an online community. An influencer has the ability to sway other persons'
thoughts, in particular their followers.
Lurker a visitor who reads content but rarely participates or creates content.
Mashup a content formed by combining multiple types of media pulled from pre‐existing sources.
Match a match or a hit is a post that positively responds to a query.
Message message has different meanings depending on the context. At Visibium when talking about a piece of content on the Web 2.0 we prefer the term "Post".
We keep the term "Message" for refering to a private note sent between users on a social network (Facebook definition).
News Feed literally, a feed full of news. On Facebook, the News Feed is the homepage of the users’ accounts where they can see the latest updates from their
friends. On Twitter the news feed is called Timeline.
Post an item of content on a blog or a forum. By extension Visibium refers to post for any Internet‐based item of content, including messages, tweets,
comments and contributions.
Prospective search a prospective (or permanent or persistent) search is a method of searching where the query is given first and the information for the results are then
acquired. Sometimes referred to as "from‐now‐on" search.

Query A set of items (e.g. keyword, combination of keywords, character string) submitted to a search engine to retrieve certain posts. A post that
positively responds to a query is called a match or a hit. The list of all hits is called a search return.
Real‐time search a method of indexing content published online into search engine results with virtually no delay.
RSS Really Simple Syndication allows to subscribe to content on blogs and other social media and have it delivered through a feed.
RSS feed
a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blogs in a standardized format. Content publishers can
syndicate a feed, which allows users to subscribe to the content and read it when and where they please, using an RSS Reader.
RSS reader allows users to aggregate articles from multiple websites into one place using RSS feeds (example: Google Reader).
Scoring
A search technique based on the attribution of a score to each document. In the case of Visibium the score is attributed to posts based on
weighted terms (strings, weighted keywords). A post is considered a match when the score is above a pre‐defined threshold. Scoring allows
the search return to be sorted from the most relevant to the least relevant posts.
Search the process of retrieving information that matches certain criteria. In the case of Visibium it is the process of retrieving posts that matches
search items such as keywords or phrases.
Search return a list of all the posts that match a query.
Sentiment a level of assessment of the tone of a post; most of the time rated as positive, neutral or negative.
SMS SMS stands for Short Message Service, a system that allows the exchange of short text‐based messages with mobile devices.
Sphere a Visibium term. The posts that are pulled from the sources defined by a Visibium user and filtered in constitute the user "sphere".
Tag a keyword attached to a post in order to facilitate its retrieval through search, aggregation or curation.
Track Filter applied by Twitter on a public or private account before delivering a Twitter feed. Visibium provides access to Twitter tracks when
creating a Twitter feed.
Troll a troll refers to someone who posts controversal, inflammatory, irrelevant or off‐topic messages in an online community.
Tweet a post on Twitter, a popular Social Network, Tweets are limited to 140 characters.
UGC User Generated Content: content posted by a visitor on the web (blog, forum, social page).
Web 2.0 describes Internet‐based services that emphasize collaboration and sharing rather than less interactive publishing.
WordPress a content management system that provides blog publishing tools to allow users to host and publish blogs.
