Power Query: Overview, Data Shaping, Manipulation
• Imports data from both conventional and
novel data sources
• Brings the data into Excel worksheets
and/or the Excel Data Model
• Web page data import that is far superior
to Excel’s built-in facility
• Adds a lot of value to Power Pivot and
Power View.
– Provides access to additional data sources
• Uses a sophisticated underlying query
language which users can completely
ignore, or use directly (or just observe)
• Available for Excel 2010 or 2013. Data
Model support only in 2013.
• Product is in preview.
• Configure data types
• Rename and remove columns
• Insert custom columns
• Split columns (i.e. convert delimited
text to columns)
• Sort, Group
• Unpivot columns
• Filter data
• Replace values
• Keep top n rows, or specific range of
rows
• Remove duplicates
54. Slide | 54
Getting External Data Into Excel
• Fetch data from disparate sources
– Relational databases and cubes
– Text files and web pages
• Filter and shape
– Select the data you want
– Split and reformat columns
• Refreshable queries
– Not just a one time copy & paste action
56. Slide | 56

Power Pivot's history started with two internal Microsoft papers by Amir Netz in 2006, who was
then an Architect in the SQL Server Analysis Team. The first paper introduced the concept of a BI
“sandbox,” which was conceived as a product that would allow BI applications to be created in a
much easier way—in a controlled environment that would include relational databases,
multidimensional databases, and a reporting tool. While the paper helped to shape PowerPivot
from concept to product, many of the original ideas changed. For example, in the original paper,
Microsoft Access was the client application, not Excel, but nevertheless, many of Netz’s ideas
formed the essence of PowerPivot.

Enjoy fast calculations and analysis on large data volumes1
Use the PowerPivot for Excel 2010 add-in to get quicker analysis of large data sets on the
desktop. PowerPivot, using its in-memory engine and efficient compression algorithms, can
process even huge data sets with extremely quick performance. You can process millions of rows
with about the same performance as a few hundred rows.
67. Slide | 67
Take advantage of Data Analysis Expressions.2
Enjoy the familiarity of Excel expressions when using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) to build
advanced analysis applications. Perform powerful manipulations beyond standard Excel
capabilities, follow relationships between tables as in a database, and define sophisticated
calculations using familiar and intuitive expressions. Use powerful relational capabilities to
create advanced analytics applications using expressions like SamePeriodLastYear(),
ClosingBalances (), Previous Day(), etc.
68. Slide | 68
Capitalize on existing skills and familiar Excel features.3
Leverage familiar Excel features that you already know, such as PivotTables, PivotCharts, and
Slicers. Even the new DAX functions follow familiar Excel syntax. If you know how to work
with Excel, you already know how to work with PowerPivot.
69. Slide | 69
Integrate data from virtually any source.4
Discover intricate information by combining data from a multitude of sources, including
relational databases, spreadsheets, reports, text files, and Internet data feeds. PowerPivot
can determine data relationships automatically and create a customizable model of fact
and dimension tables for fast in-memory analysis.
70. Slide | 70
Drill down to the key relevant data quickly5
Take advantage of intuitive Excel slice-and-dice functionality to quickly focus on relevant
data. Use the Slicer to view your data from different perspectives, filter the data to
display just what you need, and enjoy new search capabilities to spend less time sifting
through massive quantities of data and more time analyzing.
71. Slide | 71
Work seamlessly via a Web browser6
Publish your analysis in SharePoint and access your shared applications directly in the
browser without having to download the workbooks with all their data to every
workstation. Enjoy an attractive user interface in SharePoint, browsing at its best, and the
same performance and features as in the Excel client.
72. Slide | 72
Share and collaborate on analysis with others7
Turn your workbooks into shared applications accessible virtually anytime and from almost
any location to increase the productivity of your team with PowerPivot for Excel 2010.
Benefit from all the available SharePoint features, such as role-based security, workflows,
and versioning.
73. Slide | 73
Automatically refresh shared applications8
Ensure that your team makes decisions based on most recent data by conveniently
configuring the refresh cycle for your workbook applications in the SharePoint user
interface. SharePoint can automatically update the data from any source.
74. Slide | 74
Discover and build upon existing solutions.9
Reuse shared applications as data sources in new analysis to dig deeper, faster and
compress decision cycles. Rely on SharePoint as a secure collaboration platform for
centralized access to shared applications, browse the sites you have permissions to access,
and integrate any available shared application into your current investigations and
analyses.
75. Slide | 75
Track and monitor analysis applications from a central dashboard10
Let your IT administrators monitor your shared applications to ensure that your solutions are
continuously available. In a SharePoint environment, IT administrators can track usage
patterns over time, drill down to obtain more details, discover solutions that become
mission-critical through organic growth, and make sure appropriate server resources are
available.

What is DAX?
• DAX is the new calculation language for PowerPivot
• MDX is still the query language
• It is a multidimensional calculation language like MDX, but the
design goals were:
• Make it easy to do common calculations (easier than MDX)
• Make it easy to use for Excel power users, hence the Excel-based
syntax
• DAX expressions are limited to a single (though often very
long) line of code
92. Slide | 92
Why learn DAX?
• Your power users will be learning it, and you’ll need to
understand what’s going on in their PowerPivot models
• It’s very likely that it will be used in future versions of SSAS –
possibly as an alternative to MDX for some calculations
• We love both DAX and MDX, and MDX is not going away. The challenge for us
is to bring them together. We have some promising directions. That said – I
think you’ll see DAX evolving in new important directions that MDX will never
cover, and a large and growing portion of the calc work will be done in DAX.
So my advice stands: all you guys need to become DAX gurus ASAP.
Amir Netz, Microsoft
93. Slide | 93
Row Context and Filter Context
• Row context refers to the current row where a calculation is
taking place
• There is no row context without a DAX aggregation function
• Filter context refers to the currently selected item on each
column on each table
• Very similar to the CurrentMember function in MDX, but handles
multiselect elegantly
• Filter context follows the one-to-many relationships between tables
• Both row and filter context must be taken into account when
writing expressions for calculated measures
100. Slide | 100
Calculate()
• The Calculate() function is the key to all advanced DAX
calculation functionality
• Signature: Calculate(Expression, SetFilter1, SetFilter2,...)
• It allows any expression to be evaluated in a specific filter
context
• It works as follows:
• Modifies the current filter context according to the SetFilter
arguments you pass in
• Shifts the row context onto the filter context
• Evaluates your expression in the new filter context
101. Slide | 101
Power View and it’s Features
• Oldest self serve BI add-ins available for Excel
• Now integral part of Excel
• Allows data modeling and interactive visualization in Excel
• Data size only limited by the amount of RAM available on your
