Interstate Brands Corporation acquired the rights to use the name "Dolly Madison" for their franchised products sometime between 1926-1930 from a Boston firm. While not directly named after First Lady Dolley Madison, the company believes their name is derived from her due to her reputation as a charming hostess and baker. In 1934, another company called Dolly Madison Industries filed a lawsuit against Interstate Brands for using the name, but they were allowed to retain it since they do not produce ice cream like Dolly Madison Industries.

Dear Ms. Gallagher:
Subject: The Dolly Madison Name
Thank you for inquiring about materials or information we might have available on the origin or
our Dolly Madison name. According to the records we have here, Interstate secured the rights
to the name Dolly Madison as a franchised name from a firm in Boston sometime between
1926 and 1930.
Although the first name is not spelled like the name of the wife of President James Madison
(she spelled her name Dolly for Dorothea), we believe that our name is derived from this
famous First Lady. As you know, she lived between 1768 and 1849 and gained quite a
reputation as a charming hostess and baker of cakes. Unfortunately, we do not have any
detailed literature or pictures of her. However, for your information, we are enclosing a copy of
our latest annual report.
We appreciate your interest in Interstate Brands and wish you the best of success on your
reports. If there are any additional questions you need answered, please feel free to write to
me.
As you may know, there is another firm called Dolly Madison Industries which make ice cream
and furniture in Philadelphia. Our company is called Interstate Brands Corporation; and while
we do not use the name Dolly Madison on our cake products, we are a separate and entirely
different firm from Dolly Madison Industries.
Our company, Interstate Brands, is noted for quality products since the firm began. In 1934, a
lawsuit was filed against us for using the Dolly Madison name. Since the Dolly Madison name is
associated with ice cream products, and our company does not manufacture ice cream, we
were permitted to retain the Dolly Madison name.
