Did you know that the
South East of England
has less water available
per person than some hot
Mediterranean countries?
The Water Design Challenge is a new initiative to
get Key Stage 3 students interested and involved in
the issue of water conservation and associated cuts
in energy use.
The Challenge complements the National Curriculum
and provides an exciting opportunity for the whole
school. It aims to enhance teaching and learning by
encouraging students to use design processes and
thinking across the curriculum to solve an important
problem. It also provides a structured framework for
connecting your school with professional designers
and water experts.

Students are encouraged to see the six Water Design

About this manual
Who’s behind it?
This manual, along with an online tool for measuring
your school’s water footprint, is designed to help find
the answers. It is a toolkit of teaching resources for
running the Water Design Challenge (or the ‘WDC’).
It gives guidance about the practicalities of taking
part in the project, such as how to gain access to
professional designers and water conservation
specialists, and contains activity suggestions
along with background information about design,
and the issues of water conservation and supply
in the South East of England.
The WDC has been created by the Design Council
in association with Southern Water with the aim of
changing people’s behaviour and producing positive
results in the realm of sustainable action by reducing
water consumption. We believe that this can be
achieved through design and that the Challenge gives
secondary school students an exciting opportunity
to really make a difference. Sustainable design can
change lives for the better and this project gives
young people a great chance to do just that.
