• Google Glass represents a new concept of digital
device: the “wearables”
• It can respond to voice commands or gestures (tap
and swipe on the touchpad sidebar)
• They are conceived for a “snack” use with short and
punctual notifications: for this reason they are the
perfect “companion” of the smartphone, not a
replacement ….
• Google Glass is a device based on “flanked” or
“overlay” reality, as they allow you to enrich the reality
with text, images, video, music…
deep down on Google Glass
4
From origin planet ….
• Google Glass is the Project Glass’s result, an ambitious research
project launched by Big G years ago and carried on in the Mountain
View’s X Lab from the team of "moonshot thinking”.
• The first prototypes were shown during the Google I / O in June 2012
with a spectacular launch from the parachute displayed in a live
streaming (video) and surprisingly released only to the attendees.
• Since the spring of 2013 the prototypes were distributed (at a price
of $ 1,500) to the Explorer* with U.S. citizenship and winners of a
contest that rewarded the best ideas of use for the device.
* Among with Vidiemme’s American Partner, Rokivo
5
… to land on Earth
• By launching of the Explorer program, Google has ensured - in addition
to a major media response - the support of a large community of
developers dedicated to the research and development of Glass and new
ways to use it.
• In November 2013 Google released an updated version of Glass,
improved in software, and the long-awaited GDK (Glass Development
Kit) that allows full access to the possibilities for the development of
Apps, integrating the initials Mirror API.
• And in 2014? It’s expected to land on Earth, starting in the USA .... with a
price yet to be determined

• The prism is able to project a floating semi-transparent screen at the top right, equivalent to a 25 inches size at
the distance of 2.5 meters
• Information are displayed into sliding "cards” organized in a “timeline”; every performed operation or received
notification is saved in a card
With the software updates of April 2014,
thanks to the "bundle“ functionality it‘s
now possible to display on a single card
all the contents produced in a day.

pairing
• In order to use all the features, Google Glass needs a network connection
• Not having a GPS antenna, you must make a pairing via Bluetooth with an Android
• smartphone or, more recently, even with an iPhone
• In the presence of a WiFi network the Glass, after being configured by your smartphone,
can maintain autonomously the connection
MyGlass is the
App for
smartphones that
allows you to
manage, configure
Glass and
screencast (the
phone shows the
contents of the
screen of the
Glass)
11
Google Glass: basic functionalities
From the initial clock screen you can give commands with a tap/swipe or vocally with “ok glass” and ….
12
ok glass, google …
You can search on Google simply speaking the words to search (in American English). Glass will do the rest, get the info
and read the results loud
13
ok glass, take a picture
You can take pictures with a few steps and immediately sharing them on social networks and email. All pictures are
stored on the Glass and automatically synchronized with your G+ profile
14
ok glass, record a video
As for the pictures, videos follow the same rules of storage and sharing. Videos have a defined length of 10 seconds
unless extended with the command “Extend video”
15
ok glass, get directions to …
After speaking loud the destination, Glass calculates the itinerary and starts the navigator. Thanks to the integrated
compass the navigation is contextual to the user head orientation
16
ok glass, send a message to …
It is possible to send messages to the contacts simply speaking out their name; the text will be sent as e-mail and replies
notified as incoming e-mail
17
ok glass, make a call to …
When Glass are “paired” with a smartphone, you can make a call speaking loud the name of the person as saved in the
contacts list
18
ok glass, hangout with …
The hangout feature has
been removed from
Google with the
software update in April
2014 (release x16).
Officially the reason sits
in the limited use of this
functionality and in the
poor quality.
19
The release of the GDK (Glass Development Kit)
in November 2013
opened up endless possibilities
to develop new App able to take advantage
of all the “sense" of the device
20
Example: translate with WordLens
The feature "Translate" is based on the popular
App WordLens that is able to recognize and
translate a text in a selected language. The
translated text is superimposed to the original
after a few moments
21
Wink for picture
You can shoot images by simply turning the corresponding mode on and winking your eye to
snap photos.
22
make “vignette”
Vignettes superimpose a
screenshot of your Glass
display over a picture.
You can share these
around to show what
you're doing on Glass
while you're taking a
picture. It's a sweet little
snapshot of your
experience on Glass.
23
… and more
Unofficial
App directory
• In addition to the features presented, there are already
many other apps that add "powers" to Glass
• Most of these applications can be installed directly from
"MyGlass“, the smartphone App management
• Many other applications are available in the first unofficial
directories (see link)

design & develop for Glass
two options to develop on Glass
Mirror API GDK
November 2013March 2013
The Google Mirror API allows you to build web-
based services, called Glassware, that interact
with Google Glass, but do not run on it.
The Glass Development Kit (GDK) is an add-on to
the Android SDK that lets you build Glassware that
runs directly on Glass.

focus on GDK
The GDK is an Android SDK add-on that contains APIs for Glass-specific features. By using the Android SDK and GDK,
you can leverage the vast array of Android APIs and also design an optimal user experience for Glass.

designing for Glass
Glass has its own rules and guideline for design : Keep it simple,
relevant and current!
Source: https://developers.google.com/glass/design/principles
UI elements allow 3 pattern
types:
• Static card – Displays text,
HTML, images, and video.
Static cards can invoke live
cards or immersions
• Live card – Show content
that is important at the
current time and constantly
update to keep information
fresh and relevant
• Immersion - Customized UI
experiences that take over
a user's focus and display
outside of the timeline
•Think for Glass and not simply readjust
•Add and do not remove to the actual experience
•Avoid the unexpected and the "too much"
•Build for people and make the interaction conversational
•Making information easily readable (eg Pagination)
28
Google Glass and indoor positioning
• Indoor positioning systems can be
integrated with Google Glass
• The objective is to bring the power of GPS
and maps indoor
• You can tie digital information to physical
places
• For example: Instead of punching a 3 digit
number into a handheld tour guide, you
could walk up to a painting and find
additional info on your device, right there
waiting for you
• There are 2 major technologies that can
be used: Wi-fi Fingerprinting and
Bluetooth 4.0
• No single technology is ubiquitous
• There are trade-offs to each of the
technologies. WiFi is low cost and
ubiquitous, but not very accurate*; high
precision location usually requires
higher cost and infrastructure work
*High accuracy is considered to be 1 to 5 meters,
medium accuracy is 6 to 10 meters, and low
accuracy is over 11 meters
indoor positioning systems
• The localization technique is based on measuring the
intensity of the received WiFi signal and generating a
“fingerprint” for every different position
• Glass compares its current WiFi fingerprint to
Fingerprint/Location database in order to find its position
• The accuracy depends on the number of positions that have
been previously entered into the database
Accuracy
• medium
Availability
• ubiquitous
Glass issue
• WiFi signal sampling
frequency is much slower
than usual in order to
safeguard battery life
• localization takes longer
than with a smartphone
Wi-fi fingerprinting
• The use of Bluetooth technology for positioning systems is
based on Beacons
• Beacons are low-cost gizmos that continually beam out a
Bluetooth signal, running for up to a year on a small watch
battery and located at defined positions within a building
• Beacons come in different formats - including small coin cell
powered devices and USB sticks - and software versions
• A Beacon could pinpoint an item’s location in a room
Accuracy
• high
Availability
• iOS7 – Android 4.4
No issues for Glass currently
detected

Google Glass Overview 2014 Eng

  • 1.
  • 2. 2
  • 3. • Google Glass represents a new concept of digital device: the “wearables” • It can respond to voice commands or gestures (tap and swipe on the touchpad sidebar) • They are conceived for a “snack” use with short and punctual notifications: for this reason they are the perfect “companion” of the smartphone, not a replacement …. • Google Glass is a device based on “flanked” or “overlay” reality, as they allow you to enrich the reality with text, images, video, music… deep down on Google Glass
  • 4. 4 From origin planet …. • Google Glass is the Project Glass’s result, an ambitious research project launched by Big G years ago and carried on in the Mountain View’s X Lab from the team of "moonshot thinking”. • The first prototypes were shown during the Google I / O in June 2012 with a spectacular launch from the parachute displayed in a live streaming (video) and surprisingly released only to the attendees. • Since the spring of 2013 the prototypes were distributed (at a price of $ 1,500) to the Explorer* with U.S. citizenship and winners of a contest that rewarded the best ideas of use for the device. * Among with Vidiemme’s American Partner, Rokivo
  • 5. 5 … to land on Earth • By launching of the Explorer program, Google has ensured - in addition to a major media response - the support of a large community of developers dedicated to the research and development of Glass and new ways to use it. • In November 2013 Google released an updated version of Glass, improved in software, and the long-awaited GDK (Glass Development Kit) that allows full access to the possibilities for the development of Apps, integrating the initials Mirror API. • And in 2014? It’s expected to land on Earth, starting in the USA .... with a price yet to be determined
  • 6. 6 What is it and how is it used
  • 7. Specifications  Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g WiFi connection  12 GB User memory synchronized with “cloud” Google service  16GB total flash memory  640x360 pixel display resolution Additional features  Voice recognition system and microphone  Gyroscope  Proximity sensors  Accelerometer  Magnetometer Lateral touch-pad integrated in the sidepiece for sliding cards Audio transducer with bone conduction, audible only to those who wear Glass 5MP camera and 720 pixel video recording Nosepieces adjustable and adaptable to any face. Flexible and durable frame. It’s possible to mount the included lenses High-resolution prism to display cards Battery Google Glass: hardware
  • 8. 8 eyes & ears graded lenses supportmini-USB auricular Google , on 25th March 2014, officially announced the partnership with the Italian company Luxottica for the "development of innovative and iconic wearable devices “ (read more)
  • 9. 9 #throughglass • The prism is able to project a floating semi-transparent screen at the top right, equivalent to a 25 inches size at the distance of 2.5 meters • Information are displayed into sliding "cards” organized in a “timeline”; every performed operation or received notification is saved in a card With the software updates of April 2014, thanks to the "bundle“ functionality it‘s now possible to display on a single card all the contents produced in a day.
  • 10. 10 pairing • In order to use all the features, Google Glass needs a network connection • Not having a GPS antenna, you must make a pairing via Bluetooth with an Android • smartphone or, more recently, even with an iPhone • In the presence of a WiFi network the Glass, after being configured by your smartphone, can maintain autonomously the connection MyGlass is the App for smartphones that allows you to manage, configure Glass and screencast (the phone shows the contents of the screen of the Glass)
  • 11. 11 Google Glass: basic functionalities From the initial clock screen you can give commands with a tap/swipe or vocally with “ok glass” and ….
  • 12. 12 ok glass, google … You can search on Google simply speaking the words to search (in American English). Glass will do the rest, get the info and read the results loud
  • 13. 13 ok glass, take a picture You can take pictures with a few steps and immediately sharing them on social networks and email. All pictures are stored on the Glass and automatically synchronized with your G+ profile
  • 14. 14 ok glass, record a video As for the pictures, videos follow the same rules of storage and sharing. Videos have a defined length of 10 seconds unless extended with the command “Extend video”
  • 15. 15 ok glass, get directions to … After speaking loud the destination, Glass calculates the itinerary and starts the navigator. Thanks to the integrated compass the navigation is contextual to the user head orientation
  • 16. 16 ok glass, send a message to … It is possible to send messages to the contacts simply speaking out their name; the text will be sent as e-mail and replies notified as incoming e-mail
  • 17. 17 ok glass, make a call to … When Glass are “paired” with a smartphone, you can make a call speaking loud the name of the person as saved in the contacts list
  • 18. 18 ok glass, hangout with … The hangout feature has been removed from Google with the software update in April 2014 (release x16). Officially the reason sits in the limited use of this functionality and in the poor quality.
  • 19. 19 The release of the GDK (Glass Development Kit) in November 2013 opened up endless possibilities to develop new App able to take advantage of all the “sense" of the device
  • 20. 20 Example: translate with WordLens The feature "Translate" is based on the popular App WordLens that is able to recognize and translate a text in a selected language. The translated text is superimposed to the original after a few moments
  • 21. 21 Wink for picture You can shoot images by simply turning the corresponding mode on and winking your eye to snap photos.
  • 22. 22 make “vignette” Vignettes superimpose a screenshot of your Glass display over a picture. You can share these around to show what you're doing on Glass while you're taking a picture. It's a sweet little snapshot of your experience on Glass.
  • 23. 23 … and more Unofficial App directory • In addition to the features presented, there are already many other apps that add "powers" to Glass • Most of these applications can be installed directly from "MyGlass“, the smartphone App management • Many other applications are available in the first unofficial directories (see link) Notification Services >>> …
  • 24. 24 design & develop for Glass
  • 25. two options to develop on Glass Mirror API GDK November 2013March 2013 The Google Mirror API allows you to build web- based services, called Glassware, that interact with Google Glass, but do not run on it. The Glass Development Kit (GDK) is an add-on to the Android SDK that lets you build Glassware that runs directly on Glass. Real-time User Interaction Offline Functionality Access to Hardware Platform independence Common infrastructure Built-in functionality Source: https://developers.google.com/glass/develop
  • 26. focus on GDK The GDK is an Android SDK add-on that contains APIs for Glass-specific features. By using the Android SDK and GDK, you can leverage the vast array of Android APIs and also design an optimal user experience for Glass. Layouts, view and other UI widgets GPS, Sensors and other hardware Activities, services and other building block Voice Cards Gesture Detector AndroidSDKGDKadd-on Source: https://developers.google.com/glass/develop/gdk
  • 27. designing for Glass Glass has its own rules and guideline for design : Keep it simple, relevant and current! Source: https://developers.google.com/glass/design/principles UI elements allow 3 pattern types: • Static card – Displays text, HTML, images, and video. Static cards can invoke live cards or immersions • Live card – Show content that is important at the current time and constantly update to keep information fresh and relevant • Immersion - Customized UI experiences that take over a user's focus and display outside of the timeline •Think for Glass and not simply readjust •Add and do not remove to the actual experience •Avoid the unexpected and the "too much" •Build for people and make the interaction conversational •Making information easily readable (eg Pagination)
  • 28. 28 Google Glass and indoor positioning
  • 29. • Indoor positioning systems can be integrated with Google Glass • The objective is to bring the power of GPS and maps indoor • You can tie digital information to physical places • For example: Instead of punching a 3 digit number into a handheld tour guide, you could walk up to a painting and find additional info on your device, right there waiting for you • There are 2 major technologies that can be used: Wi-fi Fingerprinting and Bluetooth 4.0 • No single technology is ubiquitous • There are trade-offs to each of the technologies. WiFi is low cost and ubiquitous, but not very accurate*; high precision location usually requires higher cost and infrastructure work *High accuracy is considered to be 1 to 5 meters, medium accuracy is 6 to 10 meters, and low accuracy is over 11 meters indoor positioning systems
  • 30. • The localization technique is based on measuring the intensity of the received WiFi signal and generating a “fingerprint” for every different position • Glass compares its current WiFi fingerprint to Fingerprint/Location database in order to find its position • The accuracy depends on the number of positions that have been previously entered into the database Accuracy • medium Availability • ubiquitous Glass issue • WiFi signal sampling frequency is much slower than usual in order to safeguard battery life • localization takes longer than with a smartphone Wi-fi fingerprinting
  • 31. • The use of Bluetooth technology for positioning systems is based on Beacons • Beacons are low-cost gizmos that continually beam out a Bluetooth signal, running for up to a year on a small watch battery and located at defined positions within a building • Beacons come in different formats - including small coin cell powered devices and USB sticks - and software versions • A Beacon could pinpoint an item’s location in a room Accuracy • high Availability • iOS7 – Android 4.4 No issues for Glass currently detected Bluetooth 4.0
