3. Exhaust emissions usually contain
significant amounts of various odorous
components.
The perceived odour is due to the
effect of all compounds in the mixture
and depends upon the concentration
and odorous qualities of the
component compounds.
Therefore, it is logical that an odorous gas
sample be characterised in two ways.
Firstly, in the analytical expression, whereby the
components are identified and their concentrations are
measured
4. 1. Analytical expression,
whereby the components
are identified and their
concentrations are
measured
2. Sensory expression,
where the human response
to the odorous mix is
measured.
5. GC/MS Analysis reveals the composition of
the odorous mix but will not be able to
determine the human response.
6. Olfactometry reveals the human response
to a particular odour mix but cannot
address its chemistry.
7. Challenging malodours.
1. Masking Agent formulation (generic)
2. Anotec 0307 (site specific formulations
based on testing)
Introducing: Officer Anotec,
Officer Masking Badge # 0307
Badge ID Generic
Mal Odour
8. Masking Agent
A generic masking agent (perfume) was formulated to be applied in all
instances. There was no variation in the formulation as Anotec were testing the
“Broad Spectrum” or “one size fits all” theory of masking agent applications. In
the following scene Officer Masking has apprehended Mal Odour without a
thorough investigation.
Officer Masking apprehends
Mal Odour. Frisks him, but comes up
empty handed. Masking lets him go.
Mal Odour is on the run again.
He’s getting away with the crime.
Besides, he was far too big and
And strong compared to Masking.
10. Anotec 0307
All 0307 formulations evaluated were developed as a direct result of the odour
testing conducted. Therefore, a site-specific odour control formula was applied
to the relevant odour source. In the following scene, Officer Anotec is aware
that Mal Odour is on the loose, but he approaches the situation differently by
fully utilising the resources available to him.
The crime scene is examined.
Officer Anotec has engaged
The services of a private
Detective firm. (Olfactometry)
11. Anotec 0307
Not only did scientific
evidence shows that Mal
was directly responsible for
the crime, witnesses
attested to his
extraordinary strength
12. Anotec 0307
Investigations show that Mal Odour is wanted
in every state in every country. Positive
identification is made and Officer Anotec can
now actively pursue and apprehend the
criminal.

17. Conclusion:
Combined odour measurement techniques show
us the “Big Picture”
Enables facility operators the freedom to
choose the best available technology when
presented with more than one option
Masking Agents may be much more suited to
temporary and transient odours and are a poor
performer in continuous odour streams.
18. Site specific odour control formulations based on
the combination of the odour measurement
techniques yield up to 98% removal efficiency
when compared to masking agent applications.
Anotec odour control technologies’ success in
commercialising formulations worldwide is
directly attributable to the combined sensory &
analytical measurement techniques presented
to you today.
