2. • What technical and symbolic codes are used and for what reason?
Icons: ‘The Human Mannequin’ has many icons that relate to a more
medical documentary. The hospital visits with the doctors interviews,
help to identify that the documentary is factual. The archive footage
helps to show her before she has the illness, which is a convention
of this mode of documentary.
Setting: The setting is used to inform the audience about the
characters within the documentary. Louis Wederburn is shown
through her love for fashion, she is filmed on the set of a fashion
show, or in her room trying on new clothes etc. Her doctors and
family are interviewed in her home or in the hospital allowing the
facts about her condition to become more ‘real’ to the audience.
Sound: The sound is digetic, which makes the documentary more
realistic, the lighting also portrays this.
3. • What documentary techniques does the director use and for what reason?
Expository- There are interviews with family and doctors, emphasising her
condition,
• The narration tells us Louis’s story in more detail, the narrator takes care of
the facts, to ensure the audience understand her condition more. The
narration also takes care of each transition that she takes, for example when
she was going to London to go to a fashion show. Helping the audience
have a clear idea of her life.
4. • Who was the target audience and what were the audience appeals?
The audience of this documentary is quite broad, because the narration
helps the audience with the understanding, which means most people could
watch it, ranging from different ages etc. The audience does understand her
illness by the time they have seen her in different situations, Louis helps
with it, by constantly talking to the camera about how she feels, which is why
the audience is so broad.
