"Experimental, amusing, or beautiful, artists’ books are art in book form. They are intersections between image and text. They include handmade paper or letterpress printing; they may be sculptural or miniature. Four years ago, we began collecting artists’ books for teaching and research. This non-browsing collection varies in structure, technique, and content. Our books are used by students, faculty, and museum professionals.
Although artists’ books are tactile experiences, they are hidden in Special Collections and can be difficult to access through the library catalog. In order to increase accessibility, we have begun the digitization process for over 300 works.
This enhanced digital collection will include multiple images of a book. In addition, we are conducting artist interviews and creating videos to demonstrate the “reading” of an artist’s book (especially valuable for sculptural books). A unique addition is GIS mapping, beneficial since the collection includes several items by local/regional artists. Mapping also demonstrates the relationships and collaborations between the book artists.
Behind the scenes, we are establishing metadata guidelines to improve the organization of information and accessibility. We are creating meaningful records by describing books in more detail (e.g. structure, materials). In conjunction with VRA Core, our content standards create a consistent, functional tool. Starting with LUNA Imaging software, we will showcase images, audio, and video. This information will then be placed in ARTstor’s Shared Shelf to increase visibility.
Participants will see a digital humanities project from its inception and learn how to establish a workflow to manage complex digitization projects. "

This comes from poster presentation this year at ARLIS w/ Metadata Librarian
Wanted to show here because lays out the important aspects of the project:
what we’re doing now and need to do in future
how we want to enhance project thru interviews & mapping
But even more, it shows the parts involved in the project management.
See some pieces that are inside the tower.
Again b/c such a complicated work will help make variety of decisions that can apply to rest of project
Includes found & altered objects plus 2 small books
We also liked that created by Mason student
Helped that she had already taken high-quality photos & willing to let us use them
Can see difference btw her photos & our test shots
Now have camera and kit to take additional photos
