Introductions of participants Reason for informal discussion today – objectives
The University of Kentucky is the most comprehensive research university in the Commonwealth. UK is a research 1 institution with labs, libraries and faculty focusing on global service and research. UK is big with over 27,000 students (70% undergrads) from 115 countries
Hands on research for undergrads highly prized – see tomorrow’s booth on the KY Satellite applied research (launching, guiding and tracking payloads on pico-satellites) in Engineering and Computer Sciences
Highest rates for KY public institutions, but not high enough for Top 20 status – aspiration benchmarks more than 15% higher
Expecting to study more than 5 hours/week Wage-earning job less than 15 hrs/wk and on campus Planning to stay on campus/be involved most weekends
In 2004, of UK’s first-year students who did not return, 48.5% had earned a 2.0 or higher GPA ½ of UK’s first-year students who do not return (12% out of 23% total from 2002 cohort) enroll in KY colleges - mostly KCTCS, UofL, NKU and WKU
UK offers an academic scholarship to any student admitted to UK whose records include a minimum ACT composite score is 26 or SAT (M+CR) is 1170, and who achieve a 3.30 unweighted high school GPA.
Key Indicators 2008 cohort First Fall 2008 In relation to UK’s past 10 cohorts (ranges) First Fall Enrollment: 4079 compared to …. 2740 to 4118 students Mean ACT composite scores: 24.40 compared to …. 23.99 – 24.75 Mean First Fall GPA at UK: 2.77 compared to …. 2.63 – 2.77 Mean First Year GPA at UK: 2.75 compared to …. 2.60 – 2.76 2008 Cohort Total Enrolled Female Male Out-of-State International African-American Asian Hispanic Fall ‘08 4,079 2,088 1,991 961 32 345 89 62 Fall ‘09 3,275 1,687 1,588 741 29 259 75 51 % Retained 80.33% 80.80% 79.76% 77.11% 90.63% 75.07% 84.27% 82.26%
For the 2008 cohort the information on students choosing a major in the STEM disciplines when they enter UK shows a continued higher retention rate for students engaged in these and any other academic content areas at UK.
Don’t connect with peers in campus activities or study groups - with instructors before/after class or during office hours - with faculty in research projects or service learning - fear of straying into unknown areas on campus, e.g., research labs, WTYoung reference desk or branch libraries, international organizations For first-year students who left in poor standing after FA 2008 (UE Scenario 0) ACT math subscore, HS GPA, and on campus housing during the first year were significant when compared to their peers who returned in FA 2009 …left in good standing after FA 08 (UE Scenario 1), returned in FA 2009 (UE Scenario 4), and cancelled their registration in FA 08 (UE Scenario 5) HS GPA and campus housing are significant ...left in poor academic standing in SP 09 (UE Scenario 2) HS GPA was significant and campus housing was slightly significant …left in good standing after SP 09 (UE Scenario 3) HS GPA was significant
CS 115 = Introduction to Computer Programming - taken typically in the first fall semester for CS majors CHE 105 = General College Chemistry I – a pre-major requirement and must be taken before enrolling in BIO 150 or 152
