It is estimated, in the first ten years of its life, average annual production will be 544 thousand tonnes of copper and 18.4 tonnes of gold. Let’s look at how this will compare to other mines: Grasberg (Indonesia) Annual production (2006): 610,800 tonnes copper and 58.4 tonnes of gold Fact: It is the largest gold mine in the world. Escondida (Chile) Annual production (2007): 779,000 tonnes of copper and 3.74 tonnes of gold Fact: It is currently the largest copper mine in the world, any strikes or reductions in production have a significant effect on global copper prices. Bingham Canyon (US) Annual production: 300,000 tonnes of copper and 11.3 tonnes of gold Fact: It is the deepest open pit mine in the world over 0.75 miles/ 1.2 km deep and can be seen from space with the naked eye. That there are a number of facilities in China that can process the product (copper concentrate), so it is well located. Within the South Gobi Basin, there are two other non Oyu Tolgoi mining deposits - Kharmagtai and Tsagaan Suvraga. These contain copper, coal and molybdenum.
