Editor's Notes
I’m going to kickoff quickly, before getting into it, with a fun viral video we have running in Europe right now I think the video says a lot about the social commerce movement I’ll discuss today.
Why? Why did I take job across the country? Etc. Because of Disney’s Toy Story 3. EyeForTravel story…Bridging social media & commerce. Power to transform online commerce at that intersection. Also power to help people discover authentic, real world experiences. To inspire demand…

As head of New Business Initiative… it’s my job to carry this sign around the office. I take new ideas and concepts and turn them into new lines of business for LS. In addition to Escapes and Adventures, we’re in the incubation phase on 3-4 other concepts. So far carrying the sign seems to be working. When I joined the company in August of 2010, there was no Escapes business, there was no Adventures business. brand stands for discovery and one-of-a-kind experiences, as well as value & deals.
Founders are all part of a generation that was born digital…First some contextI’m surrounded by 20-somethings at my new job. They were all born digital and it shows. This generation has never known life without the internet. I recently read someone say that social media is becoming “like air.” It’s just part of life. For people who use it regularly, it’s not social media at all. It’s simply letting my friends know my location, thoughts, wishes, what I’m doing. And for some…

So too did about 200 other people! All with their smartphones. Many immediately posting this experience to their social networks. While a bit crazy, this woodstock-like experience on the top of Diamond Head held great promise for travel marketing…Today’s travelers wants real experiences. They want to get out from behind the screen and reconnect with their community and see the world. They want chances to create memories. They can’t wait to tell real, authentic, cool stories about things they did on their day off or their night out. In a time-deprived world, we all need to make each one of these opportunities count. Each chance to decompress, get active, connect with friends, learn a new skill, or rekindle a romance is precious.
On the last morning of my recent vacation, I went to have the quintessential Honolulu experience when I climbed up Diamond Head at 6am to see the sunrise… I was told by a cab driver that it’s one of those 1000 things you need to do before you die. I made a plan to strike out at 5am and be there for the sunrise.
