We investigate: Accidents on site Accident Research Team on standby The starting point for Volvo Trucks’ safety work is always real life. We gather our knowledge through our own accident research team, which was founded back in 1969 (40 years anniversary 2009). During these years we have built up a unique and comprehensive database of how accidents involving trucks take place. The team stands prepared around the clock to go to accident sites involving Volvo trucks where a driver and/or passenger is injured. All sites within a one hundred kilometre radius of the company’s headquarters in Göteborg are investigated. If an accident is of particular interest, the team conducts investigations abroad. Since its formation, the team has processed statistics from nearly 1,500 accidents and compiled them in the form of scientific reports. … And we actively share our accident research findings with society on an international basis. Unique knowledge gathered The unique body of experience which Volvo Trucks has gathered in the field is used in the development of every new product. Many of the safety systems that have been introduced into Volvo over the years have been developed from the knowledge that Volvo’s accident research has gathered from actual traffic accidents. A few examples are the deformable steering wheel and FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) for trucks.
We innovate: Protective safety Volvo Trucks naturally also develop solutions for protecting pedestrians and fellow road-users. Here are a few examples: Underrun protection for other road users Car occupants are often the victims in accidents involving heavy trucks. FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System) – essentially a steel structure mounted under the front of the vehicle to prevent a car from becoming trapped underneath – provides protection for the occupants of cars involved in frontal collisions with trucks. Lane changing support The Lane Changing Support (LCS) – keeps an eye on the blind spot on the passenger side that the rear view mirrors cannot cover. When the driver operates the indicator to change lanes, the LCS system’s radar unit first checks whether there is a vehicle in the blind spot. If there is, the driver is alerted via a light signal. Vehicle to vehicle communication Vehicle to vehicle communication, the system allows vehicles equipped with this technology to communicate with each other and exchange information such as location and speed. Drivers can then be warned in advance if another vehicle is positioned in an area that is difficult or impossible to see, or about to enter the same intersection with a colliding path.
What causes accidents – 10-30-90 The factors that cause road accidents can be divided into three categories: the vehicle, the road environment and the driver / the human factor. Volvo Trucks’ own accident research, along with findings from other sources, shows that about 10 percent of all accidents can be traced to the vehicle itself, while roughly 30 percent are caused by the road environment. In as much as about 90 percent of accidents, the driver’s or other road users’ behaviour is of crucial significance. Usually it is a combination of all three factors that results in an accident. However, the human factor is almost always in the picture. Examples of accident risks: The vehicle: Poor vehicle maintenance, tyre bursts, poor visibility / blind spots. Road environment / surrounding environment: Mixing pedestrians, cyclists, cars and trucks instead of keeping them separated. Poor road maintenance, poor lighting, visibility-reducing plants and trees, wild animals or cattle, unprotected road users have to share the road with intensive vehicular traffic. The driver / the human factor: Tiredness, lack of concentration, driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, excessive speed. Alcohol is involved in roughly one-third of all fatal accidents. Note: The causes can be a COMBINATION of these three factors. Hence why the figures, if added, total at 130%.
