The European CCS Demonstration Project Network was pleased to present the webinar “CO2 transport systems development status of three large-scale European CCS demonstration projects with EEPR funding” on Thursday, 26 February 2014. This webinar, presented by Jens Hetland, PhD, addressed technical and operational aspects pertaining to the transport of CO2 in Europe. It covered lessons learnt from the development of three large-scale CCS demonstration projects: the UK-based Don Valley project, the Dutch ROAD project, and the Spanish Compostilla project. These projects have been members of the European CCS Demonstration project Network since its establishment by the European Commission in 2009, when they were all selected by the European Commission to receive funding under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR). The purpose of the projects is to verify feasible capture techniques and to demonstrate geological storage options. As the distance and elevation of the CO2 transport system are inherently given by the project, the transport conditions for the CO2 will generally differ from one project to another. The demonstration projects have shown that the thermophysical nature of CO2 is prone to complicate certain operational procedures mainly due to phenomena like phase change, hydrate formation and Joule-Thomson cooling. The front-end engineering design studies suggest, however, that the handling of CO2 is quite feasible during normal operation, although customised solutions may be required to handle transients like emergency shut-down and pipeline re-pressurisation. This implies that CO2 transport is not seen as an insuperable hurdle to the design and operation of large-scale CCS systems.

OECD LEED Benelux report on green growth - Ariane König

X-Road® is open-source software and ecosystem solution that provides unified and secure data exchange between organisations. The basic idea of X-Road is that members of an ecosystem exchange data through access points (Security Servers) that implement the same technical specifications. X-Road is a digital public good verified by the Digital Public Goods Alliance, and it’s released under the MIT open source license and is available free of charge. X-Road is used as a national data exchange solution in Estonia, Finland, Iceland and many other countries around the world. To better understand the direct and tangible environmental impacts of the use of X-Road, the current emissions profile across X-Road’s operations and services was assessed by a research project. As a result, an emissions calculator to assess X-Road’s environmental footprint was built. The calculator gives a clear picture of the total carbon footprint of X-Road, as well as its individual components. The calculations used in the process were derived from peer-reviewed literature and tailored to X-Road use cases in Estonia and Finland. However, the emissions calculator is comprehensive enough to perform calculations for any X-Road instance residing in any region. In my talk, I’m going to give an overview of X-Road first. Then, I’m going to discuss the research project, its different phases and deliverables. The main scope of the presentation is to discuss how to evaluate environmental footprint of an open-source software and what are the key elements that affect the result.

UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre

From April 2012 – January 2013, a team from the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, CATO-2 (the Dutch national R&D programme on CCS) and the Clinton Climate Initiative, developed a financial model to assess the economics of alternative CO2 transport and storage options in the North Sea, based on common user infrastructure. A steering group of major emitters with advanced plans for CCS in the Netherlands and Belgium guided the project and were the primary recipients of the analysis, aiming to support the necessary strategic dialogue between stakeholders developing CCS projects in the region. Although the work was focused on potential projects in the Netherlands (Rotterdam and Eemshaven) and Belgium (Antwerp) in the short to medium term, the analysis and lessons could be useful to other regions considering CO2 network solutions. In addition to the knowledge sharing report, a simple financial model based on public data has been made available for use elsewhere in the world. The Global CCS Institute webinar that was held on Tuesday 4th June examined how the project was set up, the key lessons from the analysis and the steering group’s recommendations for near-term action to address the issues raised by this project. The webinar also provided practical advice for other regions looking to replicate the analysis.
