Task 2:
1. Explain Jaume Balagoro’s reasons for making REC in a handheld, documentary style
2. 2. Is it a coincidence that Cloverfield and Diary of Dead were released at the same time, or does
it relate to audience demand for horror filmed in this style?
3. Why do you think Screen Gems, the distributors of Quarantine wanted to get the remake
out so quickly?
For your article, you need to consider why film production companies produce remakes and the
factors that influence those remakes.
Factors which influenced the remake of REC
Financial factors
Trends
Genre and popularity
Synergy (related products such as DVD’s/books/TShirts)
Vertical integration (where a film company deals with the production, distribution and
consumption of a film)
In your magazine article you will need to comment upon all of the above
Task 3:
The reason that Jaume Balagoro shot the film REC in a hand held style was to keep the effect of
the Live TV show that was being shot at the start of the film.
No I don’t think that them being released at the same time was a coincidence as both company’s
really were just trying to make to most money out of there movies, even though they were filmed in
the same way, that style of movie is becoming more popular.
The reason that Quarantine was brought out so early to the release date to REC was because of the
public awareness. As the film was originally set in Spanish making and English version would be a big
hit as the craze about the film would still be there. This would make more money because people
would feel more inclined to watching the English version.

Article intro:
P1. Introduce your article by giving the titles of the films covered and production factors which
influence remakes
P2. REC.
Relate factual information about REC ; director, release date, distributor, budget and box office
takings. Describe the production values and context (handheld documentary style/plot synopsis)
P3. Quarantine
Relate factual information about Quarantine; director, release date, distributor, budget and box
office takings. Describe the production values and context (handheld documentary style/plot
synopsis. Explain similarities and differences with the original.
P4. Production Contexts
Explain why Quarantine was produced so soon after REC. Give examples concerning trends, genre
and financial factors.
In my essay, I will be looking at re makes of films and the reasons of why they are making them.
Some reasons they might be doing this to keep up with society and also to make more money. A
good example of a re make is Rec, the low budget Spanish film was so successful, they decided to
make a English version call Quarantine.
Rec is an independent film released in 2007, it was distributed by Filmax, and the film was directed
by Jaume Balagoro’s. They had a budget of 1,500,000 euros and made a box office taking of
32,492,948 Euros. This shows that the handheld style of filming is a good way of filming a horror
movie as it makes it have a more realistic viewing experience.
4. P5.
Explain synergy and vertical integration and how Screen Gems are an example of a vertically
integrated company. Explain how Screen Gems have contributed to the overall success of REC due to
this.
Screen gems are a subsidiary of Sony. Sony is a vertical integration company which is why REC was
promoted so well. Synergy
I think the reason Quarantine was produced so soon after REC was for financial reasons. They
realised that REC did well throughout the European audience and it was in Spanish. So to release it in
English was getting it out there to a wider audience. Both REC and Quarantine are the same genre
therefor they have the same target audience. The trend between them both is that they are both
made in the hand held style.
