Skills Profile
Scientific Background
4 years were spent completing an Integrated Masters degree in Chemistry from the
University of Leeds, including the final year spent researching phosphorous oxidation
and coupling reactions in silica hydrogels in a bid to further understand the origins of
life. A paper is currently being drafted for submission to the journal Life.
Experience of writing COSHH and risk assessments, as well as writing detailed post-
experiment lab reports.
Practical experience with NMR, FT-IR, GC, UV/Vis, HPLC and DLS.
Team Working
I have played field hockey for 9 years, during which time I have represented school,
club and university. I have also captained smaller teams, such as in Inter-Halls
tournaments at university, and Inter-House tournaments at school.
As a part of my degree, I was often required to perform tasks, such as presentations
or laboratory experiments, in groups.
Teamwork was a key part of working for the British Heart Foundation. Often, when
re-arranging the shop floor, heavy items of furniture needed to be moved around,
and everyone had to work together to avoid any injuries.
Leadership
After being a member of the army cadets at school for 6 years, I had reached the
rank of sergeant. During that time, I took many opportunities to lead groups of
younger cadets on challenging missions. As their leader, I had to be responsible for
their well-being as well as making sure that the task was completed in good time.
In my final year of school, I was the prefect of a class of Year 10 students. I was a
person to turn to if they had any problems that they needed sorting out and by
extension, I was a role model to them.
2. Communication
There have been many opportunities to give presentations during my time at
university. Often this has been in the form of a group presentation, but regular 1-on-
1 meetings with my project tutor have also allowed me to present my research
findings on my own.
Additionally, the cadet force at school allowed the more experienced students to
give lessons to younger cadets. Some of the lessons that I have given include: drill,
map reading and safe weapons handling, all of which are essential skills that every
cadet must master in order to keep themselves and others safe when on exercise.
Volunteering with Oxfamas a marshal at the Great Manchester Cycle in 2014
involved being able to think on my feet and react quickly and helpfully to any
problems that the visitors had.
Computer Skills
GCSE (Grade A) in ICT
Practical experience with Microsoft Office, Maple 18, Origin Pro 32, MestReNova,
ChemDraw, Internet and Email.
