29 year old Tiffany Peterson, lupus warrior and healthcare advocatete shares how online access to her health data saved her life after being diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in 2010.
2. Step 1: Discover
~ No support from Rheum w/dx.
~Searched #Lupus via Twitter/FB/ Web
~Found phenomenal Mentor,
@LAlupuslady
~Realized lupus wasn’t the only.
community lacking a respected chair
w/their healthcare.
~*tosses glitter* From Passive to ePatient! You can too!
3. Step 1: discover (cont…)
~Found @ePatientDave he recommended
@ReginaHolliday as my Health Advocate Mentor.
~”Lurked” my 1st TwitterChat: #HCSM (Healthcare Social
Media)
~Met Regina at Social Media Week NY
2012 & she painted my story.
4. Step 2: discover (cont…)
~Joined #TheWalkingGallery
(Artistic Healthcare Activism)
~Madre always told me, “If there
is a VOID in the world & you do
nothing to fill it...YOU are part
of the problem!
5. Step 3: connect
~Founded ‘Friends Against Lupus’ over
4+ years ago. Today we are over 11,ooo+
supportive members!
~ WegoHealth invited me
to my very 1st Health
Conference at
#ePatCon2012!
6. Step 4: engage
*Patient Engagement Tip: TALK TO us not AT us! Invite us to the
conversation, but also respect our experience with compensation! Our time is
valuable just as all other healthcare stakeholders.
~At #ePatCon met thee
amazing Dr.
@KentBottles, intro’d
to @Verilouge’s
@JeffKozloff for their
new #mHealth app
@Care_Coach!
7. Step 4: engage (cont…)
~When #lupus began
causing #depression I
saw a therapist/psych
who recommended
Cymbalta by @Lilly_COI.
The TV ads were
horrendous! My side-effects
were torturous. So
I did what any ePatient
would do. I TWEETED
IT! & guess what
SOMEONE responded!
That someone was Mr.
@Gmatczack! Doll<3
~Once I would mope in despair
that yet another health
conference hadn’t opened the
door to me. Then Regina
Holliday told me something
that resonated, she said,
“Follow the hashtag & you will
ALWAYS be there.” Just follow
the stream & ENGAGE! (Later
that night on final day of
#TedMed2012 I was still
tweeting & she painted me in
the midst of it all!
8. ...Let the Patients Help!
~So I implore you here today to make a commitment. I challenge YOU to raise
your percentage level of Patient Inclusion in your own practice, medicine,
pharma, offices, Ceo, etc. The time for talking the talk is over, it’s now time to
walk the walk. Together we can.
~I want to thank the ONC for inviting me here to share my
thoughts & have this prominent conversation. I hope that my
sharing with you has resonated somewhat. Please do not hesitate
to reach out and contact should you need assistance. I am here to
discover, connect, share, and engage. That is what it means to be
an #ePatient. Thank you.
