This document outlines the key components and phases of a web design project from a project management perspective. It discusses assessing project needs, establishing a timeline, defining the project goals, developing the site structure and content outline, designing the site, building and testing it, and launching and maintaining the site. The ideal timeline for a complete web design project is estimated to be 6-9 months.

This webinar will provide more of a project management focus. Not necessarily focused on design, or web architecture. We may touch upon these elements but it won’t necessarily be in-depth.
Assess Your Project Needs Is this an in-house project or do you plan to outsource your work? Who actually has the technical and knowledge expertise? Change Management Concept Midwest ACE used an outside consulting firm that specializes in work with non-profits. What is your budget? - Depending upon your needs, a project can be expensive. It’s not necessarily the colors and design that are expensive. Often, it’s the back-end of the site (i.e. Billing modules, membership directories that allow members to edit information, databases).
Establish Project Time-Line - A complete design can be a 6 – 9 month project.
- What do you want to accomplish? - More streamlined navigation, new look, new components. Often it’s easier to consider a phased launch. Focus on keeping things simple before making huge enhancements. We’re currently in phase 2 of the Midwest ACE site design. We’ve launched the new site with a new look and increased functionality on the back-end. In the next several months we’ll be adding content to the committee pages and also adding an acknowledgements section to the site. All in an effort to keep members more informed. For phase 1, we kept things as simple as possible.
Develop structure - starts with content revisions, click through and read your entire site, consider user testing with students on your old site – how many clicks does it take to get to a page. Identify redundant and outdated information. Enact changes – remove redundant changes and make additions if needed and possible.
