3. Growing Up
Will Smith was born Willard Carroll
Smith, Jr in West Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Will Smiths parents were
Caroline Bright, a school board
employee, and Willard Carroll Smith,
Sr., who owned a refrigeration
company. He grew up in a middle class
area in West Philadelphia called
Wynnefield. Though it may be middle
class it still was and is a rough
neighborhood to grow up in. Will Smith
attended the Overbrook High School
located in the Overbrook section of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Apparently
he got the nickname "Prince" because
of the way he could charm his way out
of trouble.
4. Music
At an early age Will smith
was pursuing music it is said
that one day when Will was
doing is thing (Rapping) he
met Jeffrey A. Townes and as
we know him as D.J. Jazzy
Jeff and they soon began
performing together as "D.J.
Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh
Prince". Now like all young
celebrities who get a little bit
of money, they went on a
spending streak. So when
the duo took off in popularity
5. The Fresh Prince
Smith made and spent a lot of
money on a house, cars and
jewelry, leading to his near-
bankruptcy in his early twenties.
Luckily, in 1989, he met Benny
Medina, who had an idea for a
sitcom based on his life in
Beverly Hills. Smith loved the
idea as did NBC which put on
the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
in 1990. The plot was simple -
Will basically played himself; a
street-smart West Philly kid
transplanted to Beverly Hills.
The series lasted six years.
6. Movie Career
He attempted to start doing
movies where the critics took
note of him in Six Degrees of
Separation 1993. With the
success that came with the
action picture Bad Boys in 1995,
Will's movie career was set. He
had a huge Blockbuster hit with
Independence Day in 1996,
where he plays the alien-battling
Marine Corps Captain Steven
Hiller. Will smith has made many
more movies since and has
even produced and directed
some as well.
7. Awards.
Mr. Smith has won
numerous awards, from the
Grammy’s which he has
won many, to Teen choice
and BET awards. Notably
he was nominated for a
Oscar for his performance
in Ali.

9. Nature VS. Nurture
The first thing I’m going to talk about is Nature vs. Nature which is the
question of is your behavior more influenced by genetics or
environmental influences? Is your personality the result of traits you
inherited or has it been shaped by your life experiences? The nature
versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The
debate centers on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and
environmental factors to human development. To keep that simple for
you basically where you born smart or did you get smart. I bring this
up in Will’s case because yes he was a very smart kid, but was he born
smart or did he achieve this smartness from reading and paying
attention in school. On this subject I believe that we are born (Nature)
with a certain mental capacity and it is up to us and our parents
(Nurture) to help fill and reach its capacity. Now there are some people
who we call as a society prodigy’s that are just born with the mental
capacity already filled, but they are few in numbers.
11. Stage 1-4 ?
The first stage through the four stages I really can’t write
about due to the fact that I don’t have enough information to
comment on them.
12. Stage 5
Identity vs Role Confusion
is when a adolescents
develop a coherent and
stable self-definition (identity)
by exploring many roles and
deciding who or what they
want to be in terms of career
attitudes, and so on. It is also
said that if there is a Failure
to resolve this identity crisis it
may lead to laziness,
withdrawal, and/or role
confusion
13. Stage 5 vs Will Smith
In this case we know that Mr. Smith
found his identity which was music,
he lived and breathed music it was
definitely is life form. According to
bio.com he even turned down a
chance to go to MIT, which is the
top technical College in the country
definitely but maybe even in the
world to. But many people don’t
find that identity till they are in there
20’s and I wouldn’t say it’s too late
but it do believe finding an identity
that late has to have some effect on
you. Getting back to Mr. Smith, he
is the perfect example of proving
people can have more than one
identity. According to bio.com Will
started rapping at age ten, they say
he was in love with the music
scene, so right there I would say
that wills identity was music
14. Stage 6
Intimacy Vs. Isolation
. Stage six is Intimacy
versus isolation, meaning if
you really don’t find
someone to have that
intimate moment early in
your adulthood it could lead
you to be psychologically
isolated.
15. Stage 6 Vs Will Smith
In Mr. Smith’s case he’s been married
twice the first marriage was to Sheree
Zimpino for three years, they had one
son together who’ s name is Willard
Smith the third but the world knows him
as Trey. I really couldn’t find out why the
marriage didn’t work but from a military
person point of view I can guess why. I
know military and Hollywood is two
totally different things but we have one
thing in common we are always away
from our family. This is from my point of
view but when people are always away
from there significant other, they slowly
lose that bond that they had. If that
bond wasn’t that strong then it will
break soon then later.
16. Stage 7
Generativity Vs. Middle Adulthood
The Challenge for middle-
aged adults is to be
nurturant of the younger
generation. Failing to meet
this challenge leads to self-
indulgence and a sense of
stagnation.
17. Stage 7 Vs. Will Smith
When it comes to Will
Smith kids, I think he’s
doing a great job in raising
them, just from watching
the news and reading so
articles, it looks like he
raised as he was raised. I
know from research that he
flew from china to Los
Angeles to watch his son
play football every
weekend.
18. Conclusion
In conclusion I think were born with most things and society
determines the rest. As for Erikson’s eight stages of
psychosocial development it really explains why some
people are the way they are, and I believe it goes perfect with
nature for nurture. I say this because with nurture or without
nurture though these processes’ can really determine a
person’s future. So I guess when we see a disturbed person
we can now know that during one of stages something
happened that altered their development. As for the person I
chose, I chose him because he has always been a role
model for me. He is a brilliant man, who came not
necessarily from nothing but from an area were drugs and
gangs were the life. He chose to overcome that and follow
his dreams, and look at where he is today.
