Friday Grab Bag: Update
Funny how things change in a matter or months, check out a grab bag topic I wrote about in
one of my first blogs ever. You tell me, did this sudden change take place because the members
actually want women included or was the lose of major sponsors over the last two years (in
particular IBM) urge this decision.

Maybe once or twice a month I’ll have a Friday Grab Bag consisting of tidbits of various topics,
stories, happenings that may or may not of been mentioned in previous blogs. Of course my
opinion will be inserted. In essence this will be a cornucopia of sorts, so let’s a take ride.
***It is what it is***
The Masters golf tournament took place earlier this month, staying true to form the topic of
Augusta National not allowing women members. The question was raised to chairman Billy Payne
during his annual news conference the day before the Master’s began. His reply was that it was a Go Daddy!
club matter and refused to discuss any further.

Honestly, I don’t get the constant thirst for some women insisting to be allowed admittance into
a privately owned club with rules over 50 years old, just to play golf. Where’s the pleasure in
this? How many men fight to get into female organizations, sororities or to go to a baby shower
with the girls. Better yet, why don’t women start their own golf club & not allow admittance to
men. You have the money, ask Oprah for some change, I’m sure she can spare a couple million
for the cause. Ladies, it is what it is. I’ll be hard pressed to believe there will be a change, so
please let it go. I don’t understand the concept of forcing yourself where you’re not wanted.
Sounds like some of the questionable civil rights tactics from back in the day, how’d that work
out for ya?

Bayonets or not, Augusta National now has women in the club.
Golf’s most iconic club welcomed former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina
financier Darla Moore to its rolls, ending 80 years of all-male membership — and a decade of
contentiousness.
“This is a joyous occasion,” Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said in a statement confirming
Rice and Moore as members — itself a break in club protocol that keeps membership issues
behind closed doors.
Both women will receive the club’s signature green jackets when the home of the Masters
reopens in October, following its traditional summer hiatus.
“I have visited Augusta National on several occasions,” Rice said in a statement released through
the club, “and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through
this very special opportunity.”

3. Rice, 57, was national security adviser under former presidentGeorge W. Bushand rose to
secretary of state during his second term. Moore, 58, is vice president of the investment firm
Rainwater Inc., having made her name in banking circles.
“They will be great representatives for women in the game,” said Hall of Famer Annika
Sorenstam, now an entrepreneur and philanthropist after hanging up her clubs.
“I always felt that Augusta would eventually allow select female members. They are obviously a
private club, and I figured they would do it when they felt the timing was right, and I am glad
that day is here.”
Though the club had no female members until this week, women long had been allowed to play
the golf course as guests. Sorenstam first teed it up there in 2004; LPGA contemporaries Paula
Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford and Kristy McPherson are among recent visitors.
Membership, though, was a separate issue that had simmered for years, resulting in a public
protest 9 1/2 years ago. It boiled up again this spring after IBM, one of the Masters’
corporate partners, named Virginia Rometty its CEO.
Almost certainly, Rice and Moore were under consideration long before that exchange. The
vetting process is a years-long procedure, often without the candidate’s knowledge.
Membership became a front-page issue in late 2002, when activist Martha Burk wrote a letter to
then-chairman Hootie Johnson arguing for a woman to join the roster. Johnson went public with
his response, saying the membership process would not be held “at the point of a bayonet.”
Burk organized an ill-fated protest at the 2003 Masters, which wound up in an ant-infested field a
half-mile from Augusta National’s walls. To ease pressure on longtime Masters sponsors,
Johnson removed advertisements from Masters TV broadcasts for two years.
“It’s significant for the statement it makes that women finally are viewed as equals in some of
these, if you will, ‘off-campus’ business venues like Augusta National,” Burk told ESPN Radio.
“Every brick you put in the wall, building a wall to equality, it helps. Is it happening fast enough
for me? Certainly not. But it’s happening.”
