Ontario has a publicly funded health care system called the Ontario Health Insurance Plan - it is funded through our taxes OHIP covers all medically necessary services (i.e. checkup by a physician, emergencies at the hospital, X-rays, etc.) Does not cover : Unnecessary medical expenses (i.e. cosmetic surgery) Dental or prescription drugs Note : The Ontario Drug Benefit Program covers part of the costs of listed prescription drugs for eligible senior citizens In order to get OHIP coverage, you must apply for an OHIP card - each member of their family must apply for the health card It is very important to note that when an immigrant land in Ontario, for the first 90 days (3 months) they are not covered under the OHIP program (A Canadian moving from one province into Ontario, is also not covered) They need to purchase private insurance for these 90 days either before they land in Ontario or shortly after landing -- Note : Some private insurance companies may not cover them if they wait too long to apply for insurance
Ask questions about your care and if you have any doubts or concerns. Keep asking until you feel you have all the information you need.
