Old Developers Just Don't Get It
Which programmer knows best: The old guy, or the kid? Can they get by working together on a product road map? How do these drastically different generations work on an open source software product together? Or are they more similar than they think? TechCrunch released data in 2010 on “Silicon Valley’s Dark Secret” – how Startups prefer to hire young inexperienced developers because they are more flexible and cost less money. More recently in April 2013, a Forrester study found that middle-aged developers are “driving cloud development.” In 2013, 71% of cloud developers have at least six years of programming experience and 11% have over 20 years experience. Generation Xer Ed (the old guy), and Millennial John-Michael (JMO, the kid) will share generation struggles, and lessons learned (along with a few amusing anecdotes) while working on their company’s open source software product, Tendenci.
