Mission Statement
At P.S. 62 we have a common understanding that all children can learn
with different supports.  Our aim is to get to know students well and
provide the teachinglearning environment that will help each one to do
the best they can.  We have high expectations for polite behavior,
academic rigor and participation in the arts.  We will use current
technology tools to help our community learn and communicate in a
global network. We will promote the values of integrity, responsibility,
accountability, teamwork and appreciation of diversity.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Arrival
School doors open from 7:35am to 8:00am for breakfast. For your child’s safety, please do not send your children to school before that time. Students
line up in the courtyard at 8:00 AM. There is no supervision in the yard before 8:00am. Therefore, early arrival is discouraged. All late students must
enter the building through the main entrance at 108th
street, and stop at the security desk for a late pass. These students will be marked late.
Safety:
We take pride in keeping a safe school environment. All visitors must enter through the main entrance on 108th
street. Visitors must present
proper ID and sign in at the security desk. Any person picking up a student, must be on the blue card, 18 years or older and must present
picture ID. You will be given a pass and will be directed to the Main Office, where you will state the reason for your visit. No visitor is to proceed,
unescorted, from this point.
School Bus:
Bus transportation will be provided for all eligible students. Please speak to your child about safety on the bus. Remind them to keep head, arms and
hands inside the bus at all times. The bus driver is to be respected at all times. Should a bus suspension occur, parents will be informed and will be
responsible for their child’s transportation.
CAUTION PARENTS:
Please DO NOT Double Park on 109th street. Take caution when letting your child out of the car. Children need free and clear access when entering
the schoolyard. Remember your child is small and may not be seen by the bus driver or passing cars if your drop your child off in front of the bus or a
car. We appreciate your cooperation in following this important safety rule established for the welfare of your children.
Dress Code
Our school has a mandatory School Uniform Policy. Every student is required to wear the school uniform, which are navy blue pants, skirt or jumper
with a yellow shirt or blouse and blue tie. We expect parents to adhere to our uniform Policy. Uniforms must be worn every day. Non-compliance
with this policy will result in written and verbal notices and a call from the principal.
Attendance and Punctuality:
Regular attendance is important to ensure successful and positive growth and academic success. Unless a child is ill, all children are expected to attend
school every day. Upon returning after an absence, a child must bring either a doctor’s note or parent’s note explaining the reason for the absence.
Appointments should be made after school hours. In the event of an emergency and the child must be picked up from school, the child must be signed
out at the main office. Student should arrive to school promptly at 8:25am. Lateness interferes with your child’s learning
Emergency Blue Cards:
One of the greatest problems our school may have during the day is locating a parent in the event of an emergency (i.e. illness, accident or school
closing). It is imperative that you keep the school updated on changes in telephone numbers at home or in the work place. Also, make certain that
additional emergency contact names and telephone numbers are updated on a regular basis. Only those adults who are listed on the emergency card may
pick up the child from school.
Support Staff:
We have a nurse on staff that will assist your child should he/she not feel well. She will contact you if your child needs to be picked up from school. It
is important that emergency cards be up to date. Parents must contact the school to fill out the proper form if your child needs to take medication while
in school. In addition, there is a full-time Guidance Counselor who sees children individually, as well as, in small groups. If you feel your child would
benefit from counseling services due to family crisis, change in family structure, learning or behavioral difficulties, please consult our Guidance Office.
Library:
Students and their families are encouraged to use Lefferts library. It is located on 103-34 Lefferts Blvd. Students can sign up to research on the internet
as well as borrow books on tape. Call for a list of activities and programs. Get information for reports, homework or just for a relaxing atmosphere for
reading.
Homework
Homework is assigned every day including Friday. In addition, each child is encouraged to do independent reading at home – 20 minutes for the lower
grades, and 40 minutes for the upper grades. Be a role model, set a time to read with your child. Free homework help: Dial a Teacher at (212) 777-3380
or www.dial-a-teacher.com
Field Trips:
Field trips are an invaluable teaching aid. They provide direct experience for learning and are an extension of what is being taught in the classroom. A
signed permission slip is required for all trips and a fee may be required. Appropriate behavior is necessary to be eligible to participate. Parent
chaperones are encouraged.
School Leadership Team:
The School Leadership Team is composed of Administration, Parents, Teachers and Support Staff. This team meets monthly to discuss, plan and
implement the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) and to determine the budgetary needs of the school. Our focus is to ensure that all students
meet and exceed NY standards.
Parent-Teacher Association
The Parents Teacher Association of P.S. 62Q welcomes you to join in making this year a successful one. Let’s work together to ensure that our children
get the quality education they are entitled to. Together, in collaboration with teachers and staff, we can make PS 62Q a rich teaching-learning
environment for our children. Meetings will be held on a monthly basis. Find out what’s going on in your school and how you can become an active
member.
Birthday Celebration
Celebrations are kept to a minimum. Only cupcakes and boxed juices or bottled water will be permitted. Please do not bring in large cakes, goodie bags
or balloons. Teachers must be informed in advance in order to arrange a mutual time.
Inclement Weather School Closings:
Parents will be notified of procedures via an automated message system. Parents should also listen to the news, or call 311 for school closings and/ or
delays.
Important Note to Parents:
It is important that children arrive to school to line up on time. When they arrive late, they not only miss important instructional time, but also disrupt
the rest of their classmates. As you know, we pride ourselves in maintaining a rigorous educational environment for your children and we need your
support in ensuring that they arrive to school on time.
We make every effort to keep parents informed.
Please read all flyers and letters sent home. Check your child’s schoolbag (red folder) daily for important and informative weekly workshops offered to
parents: Literacy workshops, ELL workshop, Test taking parent workshop and more.
Evacuation Site during Emergencies
K-2 will go to P.S. 65 and 3-5 will go to P.S. 108.

  • 4. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Arrival School doors open from 7:35am to 8:00am for breakfast. For your child’s safety, please do not send your children to school before that time. Students line up in the courtyard at 8:00 AM. There is no supervision in the yard before 8:00am. Therefore, early arrival is discouraged. All late students must enter the building through the main entrance at 108th street, and stop at the security desk for a late pass. These students will be marked late. Safety: We take pride in keeping a safe school environment. All visitors must enter through the main entrance on 108th street. Visitors must present proper ID and sign in at the security desk. Any person picking up a student, must be on the blue card, 18 years or older and must present picture ID. You will be given a pass and will be directed to the Main Office, where you will state the reason for your visit. No visitor is to proceed, unescorted, from this point. School Bus: Bus transportation will be provided for all eligible students. Please speak to your child about safety on the bus. Remind them to keep head, arms and hands inside the bus at all times. The bus driver is to be respected at all times. Should a bus suspension occur, parents will be informed and will be responsible for their child’s transportation. CAUTION PARENTS: Please DO NOT Double Park on 109th street. Take caution when letting your child out of the car. Children need free and clear access when entering the schoolyard. Remember your child is small and may not be seen by the bus driver or passing cars if your drop your child off in front of the bus or a car. We appreciate your cooperation in following this important safety rule established for the welfare of your children. Dress Code Our school has a mandatory School Uniform Policy. Every student is required to wear the school uniform, which are navy blue pants, skirt or jumper with a yellow shirt or blouse and blue tie. We expect parents to adhere to our uniform Policy. Uniforms must be worn every day. Non-compliance with this policy will result in written and verbal notices and a call from the principal.
  • 5. Attendance and Punctuality: Regular attendance is important to ensure successful and positive growth and academic success. Unless a child is ill, all children are expected to attend school every day. Upon returning after an absence, a child must bring either a doctor’s note or parent’s note explaining the reason for the absence. Appointments should be made after school hours. In the event of an emergency and the child must be picked up from school, the child must be signed out at the main office. Student should arrive to school promptly at 8:25am. Lateness interferes with your child’s learning Emergency Blue Cards: One of the greatest problems our school may have during the day is locating a parent in the event of an emergency (i.e. illness, accident or school closing). It is imperative that you keep the school updated on changes in telephone numbers at home or in the work place. Also, make certain that additional emergency contact names and telephone numbers are updated on a regular basis. Only those adults who are listed on the emergency card may pick up the child from school. Support Staff: We have a nurse on staff that will assist your child should he/she not feel well. She will contact you if your child needs to be picked up from school. It is important that emergency cards be up to date. Parents must contact the school to fill out the proper form if your child needs to take medication while in school. In addition, there is a full-time Guidance Counselor who sees children individually, as well as, in small groups. If you feel your child would benefit from counseling services due to family crisis, change in family structure, learning or behavioral difficulties, please consult our Guidance Office. Library: Students and their families are encouraged to use Lefferts library. It is located on 103-34 Lefferts Blvd. Students can sign up to research on the internet as well as borrow books on tape. Call for a list of activities and programs. Get information for reports, homework or just for a relaxing atmosphere for reading. Homework Homework is assigned every day including Friday. In addition, each child is encouraged to do independent reading at home – 20 minutes for the lower grades, and 40 minutes for the upper grades. Be a role model, set a time to read with your child. Free homework help: Dial a Teacher at (212) 777-3380 or www.dial-a-teacher.com
  • 6. Field Trips: Field trips are an invaluable teaching aid. They provide direct experience for learning and are an extension of what is being taught in the classroom. A signed permission slip is required for all trips and a fee may be required. Appropriate behavior is necessary to be eligible to participate. Parent chaperones are encouraged. School Leadership Team: The School Leadership Team is composed of Administration, Parents, Teachers and Support Staff. This team meets monthly to discuss, plan and implement the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) and to determine the budgetary needs of the school. Our focus is to ensure that all students meet and exceed NY standards. Parent-Teacher Association The Parents Teacher Association of P.S. 62Q welcomes you to join in making this year a successful one. Let’s work together to ensure that our children get the quality education they are entitled to. Together, in collaboration with teachers and staff, we can make PS 62Q a rich teaching-learning environment for our children. Meetings will be held on a monthly basis. Find out what’s going on in your school and how you can become an active member. Birthday Celebration Celebrations are kept to a minimum. Only cupcakes and boxed juices or bottled water will be permitted. Please do not bring in large cakes, goodie bags or balloons. Teachers must be informed in advance in order to arrange a mutual time. Inclement Weather School Closings: Parents will be notified of procedures via an automated message system. Parents should also listen to the news, or call 311 for school closings and/ or delays. Important Note to Parents: It is important that children arrive to school to line up on time. When they arrive late, they not only miss important instructional time, but also disrupt the rest of their classmates. As you know, we pride ourselves in maintaining a rigorous educational environment for your children and we need your support in ensuring that they arrive to school on time.
  • 7. We make every effort to keep parents informed. Please read all flyers and letters sent home. Check your child’s schoolbag (red folder) daily for important and informative weekly workshops offered to parents: Literacy workshops, ELL workshop, Test taking parent workshop and more. Evacuation Site during Emergencies K-2 will go to P.S. 65 and 3-5 will go to P.S. 108.
